This week, publisher Activision and developer Infinity Ward finally gave fans their first look at this year’s Call of Duty, which carries the subtitle Modern Warfare. It’s a return to form for the series, both in terms of the approach to its gameplay and the structure of its storytelling. And as it turns out, the single-player campaign in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will feed right into the co-op mode.

Campaign director Jacob Minkoff explained to PlayStation Lifestyle that the “single-player storyline that goes directly into the co-op storyline.” Since Infinity Ward has yet to reveal the cooperative mode for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare it’s unclear what exactly that means, but it sounds as though the events of the single player campaign will influence what players are doing in co-op.

Based on the initial Modern Warfare reveal trailer, we know that IW is reimagining the series by putting players in a grittier, more realistic war setting. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare also brings back iconic series characters like Captain Price and John “Soap” MacTavish. However, whether or not those will be the playable characters in the campaign, or the cooperative mode, is not clear.

Since its first iteration back in 2007, the Modern Warfare series has offered players cooperative experiences that are more tactical in nature and usually mission based. While Treyarch (and eventually Sledgehammer Games) have put the focus on co-op through the Zombies, Modern Warfare will not offer a Zombies mode this year. But whatever cooperative mode the game does offer will feature some form of story for players to follow.

Although Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was revealed much later than usual, there is still the same amount of time between the unveiling and the game’s October release date. Fans can expect Infinity Ward to have a lot more to say about and show from the game at E3 later this month. Perhaps we will get a glance at that co-op mode during whatever presentation Activision has planned.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases October 25, 2019 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
