- Forced texture streaming in Modern Warfare 3 update is causing gameplay issues for some players.
- Activision aims to reduce file size by forcing texture streaming, but some fans are frustrated.
- Users with poor internet connections are facing problems with constant texture downloading.
Call of Duty players are expressing their frustrations with the latest Modern Warfare 3 update after it removes the ability to turn off on-demand texture streaming in-game. The latest Modern Warfare 3 update went live on August 21 with a plethora of new content, but many players say the mid-season patch is ruining their gameplay experience.
To increase FPS in both Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone on PC, players have often been known to disable on-demand texture streaming. If left on, Call of Duty will stream the game’s textures while the user is playing, as opposed to downloading them directly to the console when the game is installed. Activision says the overall aim of on-demand texture streaming is to reduce the massive file size that often comes with each Call of Duty title. Although players once had the choice to turn this feature on and off, a new update forces the user to keep it enabled, and it hasn’t gone down well with fans.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Confirms Return of Wunderwaffe and Liberty Falls Details
Activision confirms the return of the Wunderwaffe weapon for the Liberty Falls map in Call of Duty Black Ops 6, along with other new details.
With the release of Call of Duty’s Season 5 Reloaded update, Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone’s texture streaming setting now includes two options: minimal, which will only download essential textures, and optimized, which will download high-quality textures to enhance the game experience. While the setting could previously be turned off, players will now constantly be downloading textures from the internet while they play. For those with a poor internet connection, this is proving to be quite an issue.
Call of Duty Player Frustrated Over Texture Streaming
Over on the Modern Warfare 3 subreddit, various users are reporting that the game’s overall performance is worse now that texture streaming is constantly enabled. Reddit user Evening_Travel_9090 said they are completely unable to play because of their poor internet connection. They also urged Activision to revert the texture streaming and allow players to turn it off again. However, there were also some users claiming to have no issues when the setting is set to minimum, so it appears as though this issue varies from one player to the next and is likely down to the individual's internet connection.
In recent years, Activision has faced serious criticism for the overall file size of new Call of Duty games. With each new entry often taking over 100 GB of hard drive space each year, Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone’s new forced texture streaming is likely just another way to prevent the titles from taking up so much storage space. But for players with a poor internet connection, many would rather simply allow the shooter to take up the extra space.
Call of Duty players were once again left concerned at the supposed file size for Black Ops 6, after a store listing indicated that the upcoming shooter would be over 300 GB. Activision went on to clarify that this includes multiple other Call of Duty games and has also recently confirmed that it will be decoupling Warzone from the Call of Duty HQ app to allow users to better manage their storage. As the company clearly has a strong focus on reducing the file size for Call of Duty, it’s unlikely to see the studio revert to the new forced texture streaming option.
