Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 currently appears as the 173rd most-wishlisted game on Steam, a sign that it could struggle to beat Battlefield 6’s popularity. Battlefield 6 recently had a huge launch, and this data creates some uncertainty about whether Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will attract a large enough audience to continue being the king of the FPS genre.
Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is set to release on November 14, 2025. The next entry in the franchise is being developed by Treyarch and Raven Software, and the game’s campaign will be set in 2035, ten years after the events of Black Ops 2. The FPS will feature three main game modes: a single-player/co-op campaign, multiplayer, and Call of Duty’s traditional Zombies mode.
Battlefield 6 Puts the 'Duty' in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7
Battlefield 6 and Black Ops 7 have taken completely opposite approaches to marketing that leaves both titles in fascinating positions.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Isn't Among the Top 150 Most Wishlisted Steam Games
However, with just over two weeks until Call of Duty: Black Ops 7’s launch, the game has failed to rank among the Top 150 most-wishlisted games on Steam, appearing in the 173rd spot at the time of this report. This could be somewhat worrisome for Activision, as it may indicate that the hype behind the Call of Duty franchise is dying out due to Battlefield 6’s stellar release. Battlefield 6 sold over 7 million units, becoming the best-selling title in the franchise in only three days, and its numbers continue to go up. The title was so hyped by the community that it managed to reach over 700,000 simultaneous players on Steam soon after the launch.
Call of Duty has not had much direct competition in the FPS genre recently. However, statistics reveal that Battlefield 6’s open beta was more popular than Black Ops 7’s. While EA’s game managed to reach over 520,000 concurrent players on Steam during the beta, the next Call of Duty game peaked at around 99,000.
Obviously, information from Steam should be taken with a grain of salt. Call of Duty can also be purchased on PC via the Microsoft Store and Battle.net, so it’s possible that the numbers may not be entirely accurate about its popularity. Also, Call of Duty has an enormous foothold in console gaming, with only around 25% of the game’s activity coming from PC, according to Bobby Kotick’s statements during the FTC vs Microsoft trials in 2023. It remains to be seen how popular Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will be when compared to Battlefield 6, but if there’s one year when there’s a real possibility of the king losing its crown, it’s certainly 2025.
