Developer Treyarch Studios has confirmed that Season 2 of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will officially be bringing back Safeguard, a game mode that first debuted over a decade ago and hasn't been seen since 2018's Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. The second seasonal update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 and Warzone is set to debut on Thursday, February 5, and while much of its content still remains a mystery, Multiplayer fans can now look forward to the return of Safeguard next week.
Acting as a direct sequel to the iconic Black Ops 2, Season 1 of Black Ops 7 kept with its theme and brought back some of the 2012 shooter's most beloved multiplayer maps, including Standoff, Meltdown, and Nuketown. This was just a tidbit of the massive amount of content Treyarch released during Season 1, as the developer stayed true to its word and truly brought its A-game for Black Ops 7's very first season. Outside of a whole host of remastered and new multiplayer maps, Season 1 introduced tons of new game modes, weapons, operator bundles, Zombies content, and more. But after nearly two months, Treyarch is gearing up for another big update with Season 2 next week.
An Iconic Call of Duty Studio Could Be Working on an Action RPG
New information suggests one of Call of Duty's main three development studios could be working on a brand-new action RPG title.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Is Bringing Back Safeguard for Season 2
Earlier this week, Treyarch Studios and publisher Activision confirmed that Black Ops 7 and Warzone Season 2 will release on Thursday, February 5. The full blog post breaking down the entire season, along with its roadmap, has yet to be released. However, Treyarch did take to Twitter recently to hype fans up by announcing the return of Safeguard, a fan-favorite game mode that first debuted in Black Ops 3 before returning three years later in Black Ops 4. However, for unknown reasons, Treyarch hasn't included the mode in any of its titles since, with the likes of Black Ops Cold War and Black Ops 6 missing out on the epic mode.
For those who might not have had the chance to check out Safeguard all those years ago, the mode, like many others, features an attacking and defending side. One team is tasked with escorting a non-combative robot to its destination, usually from one side of the map to the other, while the opposing team must prevent the robot from getting to its destination by shooting it until it is disabled. As the full reveal of Season 2 has yet to take place, it's unknown if Treyarch intends to make any changes to Safeguard for its return. Judging by the new emblem tweeted out by the studio, the robot that will be escorted will likely be Black Ops 7's D.A.W.G.
While it was seemingly a rough launch for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, as the title became the worst-performing entry in the series since 2008, it does appear to have started 2026 strong. Call of Duty's biggest competitor, Battlefield 6, took home the crown of best-selling game of 2025, but EA's new shooter is failing to retain its playerbase on console, with Black Ops 7 starting the year as one of the most played games on PlayStation and Xbox. Battlefield 6, on the other hand, is nowhere to be seen. It is, however, still one of the most played games on Steam.
The war between the two iconic shooters will likely continue for the rest of the year, and the two are about to get head-to-head once again as both titles will release their highly anticipated Season 2 updates in the next few weeks. While Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's next major update launches on February 5, Battlefield 6 has delayed its second season to February 17, meaning the highly anticipated update will be released less than two weeks after Black Ops 7's.
