Treyarch has given fans a taste of what they can expect from Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's map pool at launch. Set to follow last year's Gulf War-set Black Ops 6, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is taking a bold, futuristic swing for the first time since 2018.
Black Ops subseries developer Treyarch recently confirmed that, just like with Black Ops 6, four of Black Ops 7's launch maps will be smaller ones designed primarily for modes like 2v2 Gunfight and Face Off. Despite their smaller size, these "Strike" maps have been utilized in core 6v6 modes as well, proving their versatility as stages for either methodical showdowns or high-octane, frenzied chaos. Call of Duty fans have responded largely well to this shift in focus toward smaller maps, as the number of gunfights players get into per match rises in close-quarter maps, leading to more action.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Has Great News for Black Ops 2 Fans
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 developer Treyarch Studios shares new details about the game's multiplayer that is sure to excite old-school BO2 fans.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Shows off Some of Its Multiplayer Maps
In a new four-minute Dev Talk video posted on Twitter, Treyarch's Brittany Pirello and Matt Scronce sat down to briefly discuss the design philosophy of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's multiplayer launch maps. Accompanied by B-roll of some of Black Ops 7's maps, Pirello and Scronce spoke about these maps' three-lane structure and how they're designed in such a way to hopefully give players moments to "catch their breath" between engagements. They also mentioned that Black Ops 7 is scaling back on manual doors in its multiplayer maps, and that there will still be some automatic sliding doors similar to the one in Black Ops 2's Drone map, as Scronce shouts out.
A number of Black Ops 7's multiplayer maps made visual appearances in this short video, including one that seems to be centered around a tilted and battered Guild facility building set along a rocky shore. When answering a fan question about having more colorful maps, Treyarch's video showed off B-roll of a train station map flooded with pink walls and ad posters. Another map featured during this particular moment was Homestead, which looks to be taking place in a snowy, frozen lakeside shack environment with the Aurora Borealis lighting the sky up green. The shot of a destroyed Guild tank caught between two ledges re-grounded this Homestead map in the Black Ops universe. Scronce also brought Blackheart, a more futuristic-looking map that he said will be included in Black Ops 7's upcoming beta. Not all the maps that popped up were named, and it's still unclear which of these are smaller Strike maps.
Call of Duty Next is going live on September 30, and will serve as the stage for Black Ops 7's full multiplayer reveal, which will likely include fuller looks at many of the maps that were teased in this new Dev Talk episode. It'll be interesting to see whether Treyarch will keep any of Black Ops 7's launch maps under wraps until the game's full release on November 14.
