The Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 open beta will kick off on September 6 following a brief early access period, Activision has announced. The publisher's newly announced Black Ops 6 beta dates apply to all platforms, which is a notable first for the Call of Duty series.

The dates themselves were leaked online shortly ahead of their July 15 announcement, having been spotted on the Xbox website. That premature listing was far from an unprecedented mishap for the hit FPS series, as underlined by the fact that the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 beta start date had also leaked online a few days in advance back in 2023.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Open Beta Starts in Late August 2024

Activision has confirmed the prematurely shared dates during the latest episode of its Call of Duty podcast. The company hence revealed that the Black Ops 6 open beta will run from September 6 to September 9. Players will also be able to partake in an early access phase of the test, which will be available from August 30 to September 4. Access to this early version of the beta is one of the perks of pre-ordering the next Call of Duty entry. Xbox Game Pass members will also be able to participate in it.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Open Beta Dates

  • Early Access: August 30 to September 4
  • Open Beta: September 6 to September 9

While the mainline series installments have long offered beta access that was fragmented by platform, that won't be the case this time around. Instead, Black Ops 6 will be the first-ever Call of Duty game with a truly cross-platform open beta. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has recently attributed this change to the company's 2023 acquisition of Activision Blizzard, vowing to ensure full content parity between different Call of Duty versions moving forward. He characterized having a singular open beta time frame for all platforms as the first step toward realizing that goal.

Organizing just one pre-release test also makes sense from a development perspective; like its immediate predecessors, Black Ops 6 will offer cross-platform multiplayer, so a platform-agnostic open beta is ought to help the developers test that aspect of the game earlier than usual.

Some fans have already welcomed this change, labeling the Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 beta approach as a big win for Microsoft. The game itself is scheduled to be treated to a full-fledged release on October 25. It will also be the first-ever Call of Duty game to have a same-day Xbox Game Pass release, though console users will have to pay for the Ultimate tier of the service to play it.

Forced to go rogue. Hunted from within. This is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower. With a mind-bending narrative, and unbound by the rules of engagement, this is signature Black Ops.

The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.

In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.

Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
