As release day steadily approaches, developers have confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will feature a linear campaign mode with only one ending, a noticeable departure from previous games like Cold War. Black Ops 6 seeks to rectify several other aspects that caused controversy within the Call of Duty community, but the decision to switch things up for Black Ops 6's campaign stems from the team developing a concrete story with specific story beats.
Black Ops 6 is several years in the making and comes equipped with all the traditional Call of Duty features gamers have come to expect from the legendary FPS franchise, as well as a few new surprises that will shake up the formula. Alongside a robust multiplayer mode, which players got a taste of during the Black Ops 6 beta earlier this year, the game will also ship with a brand-new Zombies experience. Black Ops games are well-known for their action-packed campaign modes as well, with Black Ops 6 being no exception, planting players in an all-new story. However, Black Ops 6's campaign will be noticeably different, offering a far more linear experience than before.
How To Play Black Ops 6 Early
There's a way to play Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 early. Here's how to jump into the game ahead of time on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC.
This time around, all players will experience the same campaign in Black Ops 6. The game's story mode will not have any branching paths, meaning players will not have agency in the way things play out within Black Ops 6. This decision may come as a surprise to those who completed previous Black Ops titles like Black Ops 2 and Cold War, with both games featuring different story moments and completely different endings based on gameplay choices. The story of Black Ops 6 will be more well-defined and feature definitive moments, with Raven Software confirming there will only be one ending. “Black Ops 6 is a linear story, so there is not a branching ending for this one,” said Associate Creative Director Jon Zuk in a recent interview with IGN.
Black Ops 6's Campaign Will Only Have One Ending
This is not to say that the Black Ops 6 campaign won't have replayability, with developers stating certain missions will give players different ways to approach. Raven Software states that some missions may require a more stealthy approach, whereas others will task players with going loud. Black Ops 6 will also still have a level of interaction from players and will feature a central hub similar to the one seen in Cold War.
Black Ops 6 will make several other changes to gameplay, progression, and itemization, most notably within its multiplayer and Zombie modes. Black Ops 6 brings back Call of Duty's theater mode as well as classic prestige, two features that had become highly requested by longtime players. The traditional Call of Duty prestige system was overhauled with 2019's Modern Warfare, opting to follow a seasonal approach similar to live-service games. Black Ops 6 Zombies is also a return to form, with the game featuring two round-based maps on launch day: Terminus and Liberty Falls.
