According to a new rumor, the next Call of Duty entry from Sledgehammer Games is expected in 2027 and will offer a reprieve from the franchise's Modern Warfare and Black Ops subseries. Call of Duty fans are still enjoying the latest entry, Black Ops 6, which is currently in its fourth season. This year's new title, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, confirmed its futuristic post-Black Ops 2 setting and the return of David Mason when it was revealed at Xbox's showcase last month. The game is confirmed to have a big presence at Gamescom in August, leading up to the game's rumored November 14 release date.

Out of what many would call the "Big Three" Call of Duty studios, Sledgehammer is the youngest, having been created and brought on as the co-developer of 2011's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. The studio later had its own opportunity to shine with the futuristic yet divisive Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in 2014, the return-to-roots Call of Duty: WW2 in 2017, and its second WW2 game in 2021's Call of Duty: Vanguard. Most recently, the studio has come full circle, taking the lead on 2023's MW3, the third entry in Call of Duty's Modern Warfare reboot series.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 Could Mark a New Era For Warzone

Warzone has had to adapt to many CoD entries over the years, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 may mark a thematic turning point for the battle royale.

Now, it seems Sledgehammer has its sights set on 2027 as the release year for its next game, according to a new tweet from Call of Duty insider TheGhostOfHope on Twitter. The post mentions that Sledgehammer's next game won't be a futuristic follow-up to Advanced Warfare, as was previously rumored, and will instead introduce an all-new Call of Duty subseries set in the modern day. Despite Sledgehammer having incorporated co-op Zombies modes into almost all of its prior games, TheGhostOfHope reveals that the mode won't be part of this new game from the studio. Interestingly, much like with Black Ops 6, movement will be a big part of the entry's gameplay experience, as will martial arts and karate moves like kicks and chops.

Rumor Suggests Sledgehammer's 2027 Call of Duty Game Is Doing Something New

If TheGhostOfHope turns out to be right, Sledgehammer's title will be the first non-Modern Warfare or Black Ops game in five years, as MW went back-to-back in 2022 and 2023, Black Ops is going back-to-back in 2024 and 2025, and 2026's Call of Duty is rumored to be Modern Warfare 4 from Infinity Ward. This is great news for Call of Duty fans who've been wanting a fresh subseries for a while after Vanguard failed to take hold as a subseries of its own. That said, gamers who've been hoping for a return to Advanced Warfare may have to wait much longer, if it ever does return.

It's possible this new rumor may not be proven true or false until 2027's Call of Duty game is officially revealed two years from now. Until then, Call of Duty fans should tune in to Gamescom next month to learn more about Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, and Treyarch likely has more to share soon about the next season of Black Ops 6.
