The Call of Duty franchise has become a constant for PlayStation and Xbox players, no matter the year or generation. There's less question about if the next Call of Duty will make the scene so much as when. The reliability of the games has extended to leaks about them, which is why a Call of Duty leaker was taken seriously with PS5 leaks.
Despite its constancy, there have been big changes for Call of Duty this year on a couple of fronts. The first has been the introduction of Call of Duty: Warzone, which has exploded in popularity. It turns out a battle royale format works very well with Call of Duty's game elements. With COVID-19 impacting live events for every game, the second big change has been one Call of Duty has had to handle along with other games: how to transfer to a digital tournament setting.
However, it seems Call of Duty League has a handle on the situation. While the Call of Duty League Championship dates were previously leaked, only now have those dates been confirmed by official sources. The official playoffs will begin August 19 and run for four days, ending on August 23. The structure will be best of fives for the playoffs, and the final four teams will compete during the weekend of the following week, August 29-30 in the Champions Weekend. The Champions will be best of 9, and the map lists for both playoffs and Champions are already chosen, along with their order in matches.
The teams are being placed in their initial positions based on their performance during the year. With so much time to get good, only the best of the best will even be at the tournament. This will be the event to watch to see the best Call of Duty play: the sneakiest sneaks, the best under the wire moments, the cleanest kills and sickest headshots will surface here.
While all this is going on, the game is still updating for casual play. The most recent mini update is adding a new party mode to Modern Warfare, but it won't affect the tournament now. With all the maps and, at this point, probably most of the teams locked in, those teams won't have time for much else but practice. The setlist for the tournament is likely to become very well-traveled over the next few weeks.
There is only one month before it all goes down, so now is the time to get familiar with the eligible teams and what to expect. There will probably be new Call of Duty memes created this August because of it.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
