In an interview with Vanity Fair Italia, Sarah Michelle Gellar explained what she would love to see in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. She said:

"It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original. We will try to find a balance between new and old characters. My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”

I'm thrilled to hear this update and hope this means that several fan favorite cast members reprise their roles, even in cameo form. Whether it's Angel (David Boreanaz) or Anya Jenkins (Emma Caulfield), I'd love to see everyone again. These characters were all important to Buffy and made a huge impression on her at an exciting and memorable time in her life, and it would feel strange to never see them again.

It sounds like Gellar's plan is for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot to find the right combination of fresh characters and legacy appearances. As is the case with any reboot or remake, this means ensuring that the new teenager characters are as engaging and charming as the original ones were. Ryan Kiera Armstrong's slayer will need a group of friends and supporters who are as funny, quirky, and determined as Willow Rosenberg (Alyson Hannigan) and Xander Harris (Nicholas Brendon). While it's tough to accept that Buffy won't be the main focus now, and I would definitely love to see her in as many scenes as possible, I believe the new high school characters can be great, too.

If Gellar wants several dead characters to come back, I'm sure there's a way to make this happen, as long as the actors want to return to this universe. Since Buffy is a magical world, I would be fine with characters coming back from the dead, but I understand if some flashback scenes would work better.

Although she didn't share plot details, Sarah Michelle Gellar hinted at what fans can expect in her Vanity Fair Italia interview. She said:

"We’re trying to figure out how to modernize the themes of the series, especially what it means to feel like an outsider in a world dominated by social media. What we want to explore are the space-time boundaries that affect society today."

It sounds like the Buffy reboot and Mike Flanagan's Carrie TV adaptation might both the effect that social media has on teenagers. In a recent interview, Flanagan said his Carrie will be different from the original movie and mentioned that it's extra horrifying to imagine Carrie White in her high school locker room when her peers have cellphones. That image makes me shudder, but it's an interesting idea. Similarly, it'll be compelling to see Ryan Kiera Armstrong's slayer character using a smartphone and going on social media. That will definitely set the reboot apart from the original.

At the time of this writing, there is no Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot release date. While fans know that the new slayer will follow in Buffy Summers's footsteps and fight vampires once again, there are no other details available. It's unclear how the new show will fit into the Buffy universe and whether it will follow the spinoff Angel.
