Completing some of the side quests in Breath of the Wild is the only way to unlock more side quests and reap the rewards. One quest that's worth completing is "From the Ground Up." Doing so will unlock Tarrey Town, which will eventually serve as a hub for exclusive merchandise. BotW players that choose to speak with everyone in Tarrey Town may end up finding the side quest "A Parent's Love."
"A Parent's Love" is easy to miss because it's not as obvious as other side quests. While the reward is decent, some players may find the attitude of the quest givers less so. Regardless, Breath of the Wild's "A Parent's Love" side quest is easy enough to complete if players can spare the time.
Where is Tarrey Town?
Before players get carried away, they'll need to start the "Hylian Homeowner" side quest. Go to Hateno Village and over the bridge behind the general store. There will be three men in the process of demolishing an abandoned house. Speak to Bolson (the one in the pink pants) and offer to buy the house.
Bring Bolson and co. 30 bundles of wood and then pay the 3,000 Rupees. After the house is in Link's name, he can start renovating it to complete "Hylian Homeowner." However, completing this side quest won't be necessary for now. Instead, speak to Hudson (the guy with the large hair) and he'll say he's being sent to Lake Akkala to establish Tarrey Town. He'll then leave, and from here on out, Hudson can be found at Lake Akkala.
The quickest way to Lake Akkala is to warp to the Dah Hesho Shrine or the Akkala Tower. Look closely at the map and there will be an island in the middle of Lake Akkala. This is where Hudson is planning to set up Tarrey Town, so glide on over.
Speak to Hudson to unlock the "From the Ground Up" side quest. This is time-consuming and involves tracking down a Goron, Rito, Gerudo, and Zora to help with the construction of Tarrey Town. In addition to this, Hudson will ask Link for bundles of wood, and the amount increases each time someone new arrives in Tarrey Town. As per the Bolson Construction rules, anyone who Link recruits to help Hudson must have a name ending in -son.
After "From the Ground Up" is completed, Tarrey Town will be visible on the island in the middle of Lake Akkala (on the map). There isn't a Shrine here, so players will have to continue warping to the Dah Hesho Shrine or Akkala Tower in order to reach Tarrey Town. Or, if they have the Expansion Pass, they can set up the Travel Medallion.
How to Unlock "A Parent's Love" Side Quest
Look on the map of the completed Tarrey Town and there will be a house between the inn and the Slippery Falcon (Tarrey Town Branch). Go inside to meet Ruli and her daughter Hunnie. Unfortunately, speaking to Ruli alone won't unlock the "A Parent's Love" side quest, so players will have to come back at night.
Wait until night by a fire or at an inn, and then go to the outside window of their house. Listen in on their conversation, and Link will learn that Hunnie is sick and refusing to eat anything except a certain type of cake. After this, the side quest will formally be added to Link's quest log. Like all other side quests, there's no time limit despite the severity, so players should take as long as they like.
"A Parent's Love" Walkthrough: Where to Get Monster Cake
If players haven't done so already, they will need to unlock Kilton's Fang & Bone shop. Players can first meet Kilton at Skull Lake in the Akkala Highlands. It's northeast from the Akkala Ancient Tech Lab. At the bottom of the pillar that serves as the skull's left eye on the map, players will find Kilton... But only at night. Speak to him, agree to his monster query, and then Kilton will mention he's planning on setting shop in various areas of Hyrule.
Unlike other stores, Fang & Bone uses a special currency called mon. Players can get Mon by selling Monster Parts to Kilton. The rarer the Monster Part, the more mon players will receive.
The cake that Ruli references in the side quest is Monster Cake. This is a special cake that uses an ingredient called Monster Extract. Players will need to buy Monster Extract from Kilton for 9 mon. It's the cheapest item in Kilton's inventory, so just give him 9 Bokoblin Fangs. If players don't know where to find Kilton, they should look under the "bridge" leading to Tarrey Town at night.
Monster Cake Recipe
Monster Cake uses the same ingredients as a fruitcake, but instead of fruits, players will want to use Monster Extract instead. Approach the Cooking Pot near the Slippery Falcon in Tarrey Town, and add the following ingredients:
- Monster Extract
- Tabantha Wheat
- Cane Sugar
- Goat Butter
All three ingredients (Tabantha Wheat, Cane Sugar, and Goat Butter) can be bought from Slippery Falcon in Rito Village, but they're sold at other stores, too:
- Rito Village (Tabantha Wheat, Goat Butter, Cane Sugar)
- Korok Forest (Cane Sugar)
- Gerudo Town (Tabantha Wheat)
- Goron City (Cane Sugar)
- Kakariko Village (Goat Butter)
"A Parent's Love" Reward
Once players have baked a Monster Cake, speak to Ruli in the morning or noon, and she'll give it to Hunnie. Speak to her again the following day, and she'll give 300 Rupees as a reward. She'll also want Link to try and talk to Hunnie, but it seems Hunnie has taken more after her father, Hagie... Players can also get the "Hobbies of the Rich" side quest from Hagie, but the reward (120 Rupees) may not be worth the trouble. However, completing "Hobbies of the Rich" requires less running around than "A Parent's Love."
