Amazon Prime Video's Bosch ended its seven-season run in 2021, and the spinoff series, Bosch: Legacy, arrived in 2022. It marked the beginning of Harry Bosch's (Titus Welliver) career as a private eye. He turned in his badge and became a state-licensed private detective, meeting the required criteria with his impressive 26+ years with the LAPD.
Whitney Vance is the first client Bosch takes on after the badge in Bosch: Legacy season 1, episode 1 "The Wrong Side of Goodbye." While it doesn't take Bosch long to gather information that Mr. Vance initially hired him for, he decides to go the extra mile. Here is all about Mr. Vance's family saga and the fate he meets.
Bosch: Legacy - Who are Ellis and Long?
Bosch: Legacy season 2 featured two of the best villains Harry Bosch has ever faced.
Who Is Whitney Vance In Bosch: Legacy?
Right off the bat in Bosch: Legacy, Detective Bosch meets John Creighton - the former command staff personnel in the LAPD, and now head of Trident Security. When Bosch shows him the business card slipped under his door, Creighton replies his phone number is unlisted and that he needed to reach him. Bosch is honest about the kind of gig he will not pick up:
You should know upfront, I'm not interested in some corporate security gig.
Creighton mentions that the client, Whitney Vance, wants to discreetly speak to Bosch at his residence. Mr. Vance's reputation precedes him and Bosch is aware the man is a billionaire.
Mr. Vance seeks "some peace" and "redemption" through Bosch. He is looking for a Mexican woman named Vibiana Duarte whom he fell in love with during his time at USC in 1952. She lived on Orchard Avenue near USC and worked in the dining hall while he was an engineering student. Duarte got pregnant, but Vance Sr. Threatened to disown his son, and the romance ended. Mr. Vance thinks he may have an heir to his estate.
Mr. Vance never married, and he does not have much time to live. Bosch has got to be quick and careful with the confidential nature of this information:
To me only, to no one else. There's billions at stake here and people will do anything to stop you.
Besides Creighton, Bosch crosses paths with a rather hostile pair - the head of Mr. Vance's personal security, David Sloan, and his secretary of nearly forty years, Ida Potter.
Does Whitney Vance Have An Heir?
Bosch begins his search for Vibiana Duarte begins in Bosch: Legacy's "The Wrong Side of Goodbye." He brings a copy of her death certificate to Mr. Vance and informs him she died of suicide in 1953. While the certificate doesn't mention the circumstances under which Duarte took her life, Bosch insists that he would like to go further in his investigation:
Vibiana died eight months after the last time you saw her. She could have had the child.
Bosch's best guess is that the child's birth certificate might be under another name, the possibility of adoption, or of the child being raised in the foster care system. Vance permits him to keep looking, and in Bosch: Legacy season 1, episode 2 "Pumped" gives a peek into the vultures that await Mr. Vance's death. Creighton and the chosen successor of Vance Aviation, Philip Corwin, are worried about the private eye. Creighton anticipates litigation once Mr. Vance is dead, and he assures Corwin that he's been keeping an eye on Bosch. Corwin also gets in touch with David Sloan, feigning interest in Mr. Vance's health and asking him to reach out, should he need anything at all.
Bosch learns Duarte gave birth to a baby boy at St. Helen's Home for Unwed Mothers. She died by suicide after she was forced to give her child up for adoption. The adopted parents, Luca and Audrey Santanello promised to keep the baby's name - Dominick. Bosch and his tech guy, Mo Bassi, find out that Mr. Vance's heir, Dominick Santanello, was "killed in action" in Vietnam before his 20th birthday. Later, he spots a recurring entry by someone named Olivia MacDonald on Dominick's the Vietnam War Wall of Faces page and gets in touch with her.
Bosch visits Olivia in Bosch: Legacy season 1, episode 4 "Horseshoes and Hand Grenades" and learns she is Dominick's adopted sister. Through her, Bosch gets a chance to go through Dominick's military trunk. He notices strands of hair in a hairbrush and an undeveloped film that he salvages. He is deeply interested in the pictures of a woman holding a baby. Deeper into the investigation, Bosch learns through Dominick's old friend, Halley B. Lewis that the woman holding a child in a few photos is a Latina photojournalist (Gabriela Lida) who was sent to Camp Pendleton to do an anti-war story. She and Dominick fell in love and Mr. Vance might have an heir. Bosch, meanwhile, asks Chandler to recommend a private lab for DNA comparison.
What Happens To Whitney Vance In Bosch: Legacy?
Mr. Vance passes away at 88 in Bosch: Legacy season 1, episode 5 "Plan B." Per Corwin's people, the billionaire's shares and interests in the company should pass to the board in a week. Things take an interesting turn when Bosch receives Mr. Vance's heirloom gold pen and his holographic (handwritten) will, of which he is the sole executor. Honey Chandler advises Bosch to continue the heir-hunt and wait for the corporation to make the first move. Ida has become a crucial part of the case now, as Mr. Vance had directed her to mail Bosch the package. Only she can confirm the authenticity of the heirloom pen, or as Chandler puts it:
We need Ida to confirm it. Verification every step of the way. Chain of authenticity. His pen, his signature and the pen's ink.
Bosch and Chandler decide to make copies of the will and keep them safe. Bosch gives the original to J. Edgar for safekeeping and, meanwhile, the medical examiner, Gary Potter from the LAPD, tells him Vance's autopsy hasn't been finalized yet and that there is possible evidence of foul play. Bosch meets Gabriela Lida in Bosch: Legacy season 1, episode 7 "One of Your Own" and learns that she and Dominick were married informally. Dominick is survived by a daughter named Vibiana Veracruz and a grandson, Gilberto. The three of them have a conversation, and Bosch ends up telling Vibiana everything about the investigation and Mr. Vance.
At the end of season 1, Ida is detained after she confesses to murdering Mr. Vance. Chandler tells the media in Bosch: Legacy season 1, episode 10 "Always/All Ways" that they filed a petition to "determine administration" of Mr. Vance's estate and that the man did not die without heirs:
He has a granddaughter and a great-grandson and we intend to prove it through DNA analysis and other means at the hearing in support of the motion.
