Bosch: Legacy Spin-Off Will Star Maggie Q As Renee Ballard

Maggie Q is set to play Renee Ballard in the Bosch: Legacy spin off series.

Bosch: Legacy and its spin-off will be based on the same book and feature crossovers

The Desert Star novel was released in 2022, and it saw LAPD detective Renée Ballard and Harry Bosch work together to hunt a killer who is known to be Bosch's “white whale.” It has now been revealed that season 1 of the Renee Ballard spin-off and Bosch: Legacy season 3 will both be based on this book, and it'll feature crossovers between both shows.

Michael Connelly revealed the information in an interview with The Tampa Bay News:

That book has what I call the double helix structure. It has two cases wrapped around each other. So it’s not going to be the whole season, but one part is going to be the main arc for Ballard, and one is the main arc for Legacy. There's also things in earlier Ballard books, cases and L.A. Politics and stuff, that are in the first season. It’s like Bosch — anything that’s in these books, the scriptwriters can take.

This revelation about Bosch: Legacy season 3 and the Renee Ballard spin-off series being heavily linked is very exciting news for fans of the Bosch universe. Bosch first burst onto television screens in 2014, and ten years later, it shows no signs of going anywhere anytime soon, especially with another spin-off based on Jerry Edgar planned.

Will Titus Welliver star in the Renee Ballard spin-off?

Titus Welliver is set to be a part of both shows, as his character will be a supporting guest star in the Renee Ballard spin-off series, while he resumes the lead role in Bosch: Legacy. It's also expected that several characters will cross over from one series to the next. The spin-off series looks set to be based around a new cold case division that Renee Ballard will run, but it will feature significant changes from the books.

Michael Connelly elaborated on Titus Welliver's involvement in the Renee Ballard series in his interview with the Tampa Bay News:

There will be some [Harry Bosch presence]. The (Ballard) show is actually written, and it will go into production in July. I think Bosch is in three episodes, maybe two. There will probably be some other crossover.

Based on what Connelly has revealed, the Renee Ballard show will very much stand on its own two feet, but it will feature Harry Bosch in a significant guest role, which will link it via crossovers with Bosch: Legacy season 3.

What to expect from Bosch: Legacy season 3?

In depth plot details for Bosch: Legacy season 3 remain under wraps. However, Amazon Freevee has released an official synopsis for the upcoming season in a press release:

Season 3 of Bosch: Legacy, currently in production, is based on Michael Connelly’s best-selling novels Desert Star (2022) and The Black Ice (1993). The murder investigation of Kurt Dockweiler (David Denman) brings dangerous secrets to light and threatens to ruin the lives of our three principal characters. The disappearance of a family haunts Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) and forces him to confront the limits of justice. In a hotly contested race, Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers) is poised to become the next District Attorney of Los Angeles. And Maddie Bosch (Madison Lintz) gets entangled in a series of violent follow-home robberies.

Every season of Bosch and its spin-off, Bosch: Legacy, has been based on a mixture of two of Michael Connelly's books, and Bosch: Legacy season 3 will follow the same format, with the added exciting element of the crossover with the Renee Ballard spin-off, with both series featuring aspects of Desert Star.

There are a lot of plot points still hanging over from the conclusion of Bosch: Legacy season 2, that will need to be resolved in season 3, with Chandler's run for District Attorney set to be explored further, as well as the aftermath of Preston Borders' claims that Harry Bosch was involved in the murder of Kurt Dockweiler. It's shaping up to be an exciting future for the Bosch universe, as it expands.
