The character of Renee Ballard was introduced into Michael Connelly's Bosch-verse in the 2017 book, The Late Show, and it sees the detective take on a poorly underfunded cold case unit. The book doesn't feature Harry Bosch, but it sounds like it will at least provide the basis for the new spin-off series. However, the main book Ballard's debut season will be based on is 2022's Desert Star. The series is expected to be a hit, so more of Michael Connelly's books could be adapted into future seasons. The upcoming release, The Waiting, could be a good book to focus on in season 2 as it introduces Maddie Bosch into the story.
The plot of The Waiting sees Renee Ballard's cold case unit get a big DNA connection between a man in custody and a serial murderer and rapist who hasn't been heard of for 20 years. However, the recently arrested man is only 24 years old, so Ballard links the familial DNA to his father, who it turns out was a criminal known as The Pillowcase Rapist, who went on a long reign of terror in Los Angeles. The cold case team must battle a series of legal issues to uncover the secrets behind these horrendous crimes, and Harry Bosch also helps out on the case.

'The library of lost souls' is a collection of cold case murder books, and they are first referenced in Michael Connelly's Desert Star book. As fans already know, Bosch: Legacy season 3 and the debut season of the Renee Ballard spin-off series will both be based on this particular book, so these murder books and Maddie's interest in them will probably be set up in Bosch: Legacy, when Ballard shows up sooner than expected in the finale, and then expanded upon in the spin-off series.
