Chris Browning Explains How Preston Borders' Return Came About In That Tense Cliffhanger At The End Of Season 2

It was great to see Preston Borders return at the end of Bosch: Legacy Season 2. How did that originally come about?

I'm not sure if I had anything to do with this, but I'm in contact with our fearless leader quite a bit, and I joked with him, 'Hey, I'm loving Legacy, when is Preston Borders coming back?' And they actually said, that's a good idea. You're going to do one scene at the end of Bosch: Legacy season 2, so I went in and did the little call from prison.

Season 3 does have a bit of a time jump. Can you give us some background on what happened?

I saw they were back in production, and I was thinking, where's my call? I'm the cliffhanger. I should be the first scene of Bosch: Legacy season 3. I did hear they did some storylines before they got to my thing, but they got to it, and we have a lot of cool stuff.

The Character Of Preston Borders Is So Believable And It Partly Came From Browning's Own Life Experiences

Chris Browning

Chris Browning had first-hand experience of the types of villains he would go on to portray in movies and television during a tough period in his life when he was in and out of county jail:

I was a typical Hollywood guy, working on a couple of sitcoms. Then I tried heroin once for six years. I was a homeless junkie for six years in Los Angeles. I spent half of that locked up in the county jail. I was a thief. Typical junkie crimes. I spent a lot of time there and I saw those guys. They were fascinating to me. Arian brotherhood dudes. They are in the county jail because they have a new case. I have got to be such an expert from talking to people. That was my jailhouse hustle. Being a jailhouse lawyer.

Browning never once judged the inmates he helped during this difficult time, and it surely helped him tap into the mind of three-dimensional villain, Preston Borders in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy. Harry Bosch's long-time enemy is dangerously charismatic, and audiences love to hate him. However, when the subject came up about Preston Borders potentially working with Harry Bosch, Browning was quite candid about how events didn't exactly transpire the way some fans might have initially expected:

Harry Bosch has got a little more leeway in what he can and cannot do. I talked to Connelly, and he said, 'You didn't die, but you could find a way to make yourself useful. There could be something they need from you.' You need my help. Here's what I want. I was expecting that, and that's not how it worked out. They aren't the enemies getting together to crack a case. We don't become a dynamic duo.

In fact, Browning summed up Preston Borders' unique take on the world, and how Harry Bosch fits into that:

I think if Preston Borders had one wish in life, it would be to take out Harry Bosch. In his psychotic mind, it's his fault that he's in prison. If it weren't for him, he would be freely running the streets killing people at will.

Chris Browning's Key Roles To Watch

  • Felon (2008)
  • Road to Paloma (2014)
  • Last Rampage: The Escape Of Gary Tison (2017)

The Explosive Action Scene In Bosch: Legacy's Final Season Was A Lot Of Fun To Shoot

Chris Browning as Preston Borders

Bosch: Legacy's final season fourth episode saw one of the greatest action sequences of all time in Michael Connelly's crime saga. Chris Browning was thrilled to get Preston Borders out of his jail cell, and embroiled in some of the high-octane action:

I couldn't wait to see what they'd have me do in Season 3, and it was some great stuff. I had a lot of storyline. Fighting, riding, shooting and running, and I would come home exhausted. There were a lot of stunts, and crazy big shots in this thing. They gave me a lot to do. I come around this warehouse, and I turn right on the sidewalk for a 200-yard sprint. They tried to get it with this camera, and then a drone. I had a lot of hot baths at the end of the day.

It might be the end of Preston Borders in the Bosch verse, after his botched escape led to his death at the hands of Jimmy Robertson (Paul Calderon), but Chris Browning has plenty more exciting roles to play in his career.
