Summary

  • Season 2 of Bosch: Legacy reveals the corrupt and dangerous foes, Detectives Ellis and Long, that Harry Bosch faces.
  • Ellis and Long frame David Foster for murder, but Bosch uncovers the truth and confronts them.
  • Bosch and Chandler gather evidence against Ellis and Long, forcing the DA to drop the case and Chandler plans to run for the top job.

Harry Bosch has come up against some very dangerous villains over the last decade in Bosch on Prime Video and its spin-off, Bosch: Legacy on Freevee. Most of these villains had a background in criminal activity, but shockingly, in season 2 of Bosch: Legacy, the ex LAPD detective turned private investigator faced off against two current police officers who were involved in the murder of Lexi Parks.

Detectives Don Ellis and Kevin Long knew all the tricks to play using their extensive background in the LAPD, but they didn't bank on coming up against a legendary ex LAPD detective when trying to cover up their crimes. Harry Bosch was no stranger to witnessing dirty cops during his tenure in the department, but Ellis and Long were by far the most corrupt and dangerous foes he had gone up against in both series.

Bosch: Legacy features a slew of characters from the original series, but who else could turn up in the next season?

Who are Ellis and Long in Bosch: Legacy?

ellis and long

After the shocking events of Maddie Bosch's kidnapping in the first two episodes of Bosch: Legacy season 2, the sophomore run saw the focus shift to the brutal murder of a woman called Lexi Parks, who was the assistant city manager for West Hollywood. The police arrest a man called David Foster for the crime, and he subsequently calls Honey Chandler to represent him. However, Foster is innocent, and the real murderers were two LAPD detectives called Don Ellis and Kevin Long.

Chandler knows there's one man who can uncover the truth and that is private investigator, Harry Bosch. He gets to work on the case, while Chandler is targeted by Ellis and Long when they frame her for drunk driving and use her brief incarceration as an opportunity to look through Foster's files in her car.

Bosch meets with Detectives Pierce and Vega who are assigned to the murder of a man called James Allen who was in a relationship with David Foster. Turns out, Allen had previously been arrested for sex work and drug dealing, but these arrest stopped happening three years ago and Bosch thinks someone on the inside was looking out for him. Bosch then tracks down the detectives that arrested Allen, and this leads him to Ellis and Long.

Bosch finds out from Maurice 'Mo' Bassi that Ellis and Long are experts at surveillance, which makes him think they are tracking his car. Mo finds the tracker, but Bosch says they should leave it in his car to see what they'll do.

Bosch's suspicions of Ellis and Long are confirmed when Chandler identifies them as the detectives who pulled her over during her DUI arrest. Bosch and Mo are in his car when Ellis and Long run them off the road, clearly worried about how close Bosch is getting to outing them in connection with Lexi Parks' murder.

What happened to Ellis and Long in season 2?

bosch impersonating a doctor

Bosch has confirmed Ellis and Long killed Lexi Parks and framed David Foster for the murder, but he can’t quite figure out how Foster’s DNA was found at the scene of the crime. Bosch's investigation leads him to visit a man called Dr. Schubert, whom he visits at his home to warn him he could be in danger from Ellis and Long. This conversation is interrupted when the two corrupt detectives turn up at Schubert’s home.

Schubert tries to convince Ellis and Long that he didn’t tell Bosch anything, but Long shoots him dead. A gun battle ensues, and Bosch shoots Long, but Ellis escapes. Long is still alive but needs medical attention, but refuses to say where Ellis is heading. Turns out, Ellis is hiding out on a boat after paying someone to help him escape town. Bosch finds out Ellis and Long got possession of a boat as part of a scam, and heads to the location where he believes Ellis is hiding out.

Maddie Bosch has been tracking her father's location and heads to the marina with Reina Vasquez to find out what he's up to, believing he could be in danger and going after Ellis on his own. Bosch finds Ellis and a fight ensues. Ellis appears to be getting the upper hand on Bosch as he grabs a gun and points it at him. Luckily, Maddie arrives in the nick of time and shoots Ellis dead, knocking him off the boat and into the water.

In the aftermath of the shooting, Maddie says she justifies the shooting of Ellis by using Harry Bosch's old saying:

Taking a life to save a life

Chandler presents evidence in court that suggests Ellis and Long murdered Lexi Parks and used a condom from James Allen to plant Foster’s DNA at the scene. The judge decides the evidence is strong enough, with Chandler pleading with the DA to drop the case, but he refuses.

Bosch and Chandler figure they need a confession from Kevin Long, so Bosch comes up with a plan. Long is recovering from his injuries in hospital and Bosch figures he won’t know Ellis is dead. So, he impersonates a doctor and gains access to Long’s hospital room and reads him a fake confession from Ellis which claims Long murdered Lexi Parks. Long maintains it was Ellis who killed her and Bosch has this confession on tape.

Bosch and Chandler present the recording to the DA, but he insists it’s inadmissible in court as they didn’t get Long’s consent to record the confession. Chandler says she plans to release the recording to the press, so he’ll have to explain why he didn’t drop the case in light of the incriminating evidence. This forces the DA to drop the case against David Foster and Chandler plans to oust him as the DA in a run for the top job in Bosch: Legacy season 3.
