The following article contains spoilers for Naruto and Boruto.

Rasengan is one of the most memorable jutsu from Naruto's universe. Since its introduction early in the series, Kishimoto has expanded the possibilities for this technique, with many variants performed by many characters. Although deeply related to Naruto's family, many other shinobi also know how to perform a Rasengan, and it's a very versatile jutsu.

It would be no different with the sequel of the manga, Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. As expected, Boruto Uzumaki soon learned from his father how to use Rasengan, and other characters have helped him find his own style and create his own variants of this jutsu. Here's all you need to know about the Rasengan variants used by Boruto in the story so far.

Rasengan is the signature jutsu of the Uzumaki family, and it carries a deep, emotional history. Minato Namikaze, Naruto's father, invented this jutsu so Kushina Uzumaki, Naruto's mother and former Jinchuriki, could use it in missions. His inspiration was the Tailed Beast Ball, and the technique is supposed to work well with a high volume of chakra. It was Kushina who gave the jutsu its name.

When performing Rasengan, the user emits chakra from their palm, rotating it in multiple directions, turning the energy into a sphere/ball. Though technically a shape transformation, it requires no hand seals. While the technique itself is simple (it's only a mass of chakra), it is actually quite challenging to master, as rotating chakra requires immense control. Just like his father, Boruto relies a lot on this jutsu in the story.

Since Rasengan is useful and versatile, users might end up creating variations of it. A simple way to upgrade this jutsu is by using more chakra, expanding the ball. In the anime, Naruto creates the Big Ball Rasengan (or Giant Rasengan), a bigger and more powerful ball, by accident. Later, he made an even larger ball, the Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan (also called Massive Rasengan or Super Giant Rasengan), which he can use with only one hand. Boruto learned these two variants from his father.

This isn't a tale about a boy who aims to become Hokage. That was my dad's story. This is none other than my story!

— Boruto Uzumaki

Two Rasengan users can also combine powers and make a big "cooperative Rasengan." In the story, we have only seen it be performed by father and son duos. Both Naruto and Minato; then Boruto and Naruto, have used the Parent and Child Rasengan. With his father, Naruto used it in both Tailed Beast Mode and Sage Mode, creating a massive ball when fighting against Obito Uchiha. Then in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Naruto and Boruto use it to kill Momoshiki Otsutsuki.

However, similarly to the Parent and Child Rasengan, Boruto and Kawaki have also combined forces and created a single, enormous Rasengan. With both Kama active, they channel their energy into one another to perform an explosive ball called Rasengan: Unison. There's also a game-exclusive variant of Rasengan that Boruto can use: Kama Rasengan, in which he uses shadow clones and Kama to throw a massive Rasengan at the opponent.

Super Compression Rasengan (combined jutsu)

This jutsu was invented by Boruto Uzumaki in the anime of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, while training with Kakashi Hatake, who advised him to find his own style. Using both to condense and compress chakra, he created a concentrated, penetrating, and hard-to-defend version of the classic technique. It is sometimes called High Compression Rasengan or Compressed Rasengan.

Later in the anime, Boruto combines this jutsu with Mitsuki's senjutsu chakra and Sarada Uchiha's powers, inventing the Super Compression Rasengan, an advanced and even more powerful version of this variant.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, Chapter 2

Boruto Uzumaki

Rasengan: "Uzuhiko" is arguably the most advanced variant of this jutsu. It was introduced in the first chapters of Boruto: Two-Blue Vortex and it is performed by harnessing the user's chakra along with planetary chakra (the energy flowing from Earth). This fusion allows Boruto to gather an insane amount of power, enabling him to perform the most powerful Rasengan we have seen so far. He likely developed this technique while training with Sasuke during the time-skip.

However, to use it, Boruto's feet must touch the ground (though it is possible he could perform it with any part of his body touching the ground once he fully masters the technique). This is essential for absorbing the planetary chakra, and he needs a moment to charge up the attack. According to the manga, this is like a "Rasengan version" of the Tailed Beast Ball jutsu.

Wind Release Rasengan

Naruto, Chapter 330

Naruto Uzumaki (Boruto uses it only in the anime)

In Naruto, it doesn't take long for the main character to combine Rasengan with elemental techniques. Similarly, Boruto also learned how to upgrade the jutsu with his own elemental touch to it.

Lighting Release: Vanishing Rasengan

Boruto throwing his Vanishing Rasengan

Early in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Boruto accidentally adds Lighting Release to a Rasengan, which makes the energy sphere disappear from sight before hitting the enemy. This creates a surprise element to the jutsu. However, this combination makes the attack a bit less powerful than the regular Rasengan. Although Boruto created the Vanishing Rasengan, it was Sasuke who named it.

The Anime-Exclusive Wind Release: Rasengan

Naruto's Wind Release: Rasengan.

The Wind Release Rasengan, also known as Wind Style: Rasengan, is canonically used by Naruto Uzumaki in the manga. He combines his wind-nature with Rasengan, infusing wind in the ball (Minato actually tried to combine Rasengan and elemental techniques, but failed). In the anime, Boruto also learns how to perform this jutsu.

Thus, with all Rasengan explained so far, here is a brief list of the variations used by Boruto up to this point. Given the manga is still ongoing, more variants will likely appear:

  • Rasengan;
  • Big Ball Rasengan;
  • Ultra-Big Ball Rasengan;
  • Vanishing Rasengan;
  • Wind Release: Rasengan (anime-only for Boruto);
  • Parent and Child Rasengan (with Naruto);
  • Rasengan: Unison (with Kawaki);
  • Compression Rasengan (anime-only jutsu);
  • Super Compression Rasengan (with Mitsuki and Sarada);
  • Rasengan: Uzuhiko;
  • Kama Rasengan (game-only).

Naruto, Boruto: Next Generations and Boruto: Two-Blue Vortex are available to read on MANGA Plus. However, to fully access the series, readers should have a paid membership.
