Even when Jigen made his move, Naruto and Sasuke were the ones to stand in his way, and eventually, Naruto Uzumaki was the one who defeated Isshiki Otsutsuki as well.

Together, Naruto and Sasuke saved Konoha from countless threats, but unfortunately, the Boruto series has deemed it fit to cast them aside for the new generation. Both Naruto and Sasuke were dealt with disrespectfully in Boruto and were cut out of the plot in different ways. For Naruto Uzumaki, this happened after Kawaki decided to seal him away following his loss of Kurama. For Sasuke, this happened after his Rinnegan was stabbed by Momoshiki and then, during the timeskip, he eventually fought Code, which led to him being bitten by one of the Claw Grimes and turned into a tree.
Clearly, the era of Naruto and Sasuke is now over, and their absence will lead to a new powerful duo to step up and take their place because the world still needs saviours, and it seems that the Boruto series has decided to push forward Boruto Uzumaki and Kawaki for this role.

Undoubtedly, Boruto and Kawaki are meant to parallel Naruto and Sasuke. These two are, in many ways, a reversal of Naruto and Sasuke, but they are a powerful duo that will go on to save the world, and that remains unchanged. Boruto and Kawaki were once brothers, but right now, they are at odds with each other, just as Naruto and Sasuke were. They also wield tremendous powers, just as Naruto and Sasuke did. Even if the authors wanted to, they can't hide the similarities between the two, and the fact that Naruto and Sasuke are actually the inspiration for these two characters.
The same character archetype and the same dynamic has been used here, which is why it is easy for fans to tell that these two individuals will go on to save the world later down the line, and that they will go on to replace Naruto and Sasuke.

It goes without saying that, in the end, Boruto and Kawaki will go on to reach great heights of power and they might even go on to save the world. However, that doesn't change the fact that they will always be secondary to Naruto and Sasuke and will never truly go on to replace the love that fans have for the original duo. In many ways, Boruto and Kawaki’s duo is rather forced, and fans recognize that. No matter how well they perform or how many powerful enemies they beat, they will never truly go on to replace the iconic duo set in the original Naruto series that fans all over the world have come to love.
Fans Are Hoping For Naruto and Sasuke To Return
Naruto And Sasuke Will Not Return Anytime Soon
Of course, all readers are interested in seeing the advancements of Boruto Uzumaki and Kawaki in the Two Blue Vortex manga, but more than that, they want to see Naruto and Sasuke make their grand return. After being treated very badly by the author in the main story, fans are hoping for the author to redeem himself by bringing back Naruto and Sasuke at the end and giving them the respect they deserve. If Ikemoto brings them back, then Naruto and Sasuke would need to be pushed to the battlefield once again and be given new powers, as their original powers have been utterly destroyed in this new series.
At the end of the day, there is not going to be a duo more iconic than that of Naruto and Sasuke, and every fan of the series recognizes that. Fans can only hope that Naruto and Sasuke are given their flowers in the sequel series upon their return, and at the very least, treated with dignity. That said, their time as the main duo of this franchise is officially over because Boruto and Kawaki are here to stay, despite being the inferior duo of the two.
