The Boruto series has introduced quite a lot of new faces who drive the plot forward with their actions and decisions. From the titular protagonist, Boruto Uzumaki, to the villains in recent chapters, the series has expanded the shinobi world to great lengths with these cast additions.
However, among these characters in Boruto, some actively ruin the story and drive fans crazy instead of elevating the series. Their presence made fans shake their heads in disappointment, as the series could have been better without them. From irritating characters who cause unnecessary problems to villains with weak development, Boruto has a fair share of characters that ruin the fun.
Kawaki Uzumaki
-
Kawaki Uzumaki is no stranger to backlash, as the adoptive son of the Seventh Hokage is directly responsible for Naruto Uzumaki’s unfortunate fate in the series. Sealing Naruto in a dimension where time doesn’t flow is the final straw for fans who held onto hope that Kawaki would become a better character after everything good that has happened to him in Konoha.
However, until now, Kawaki remains the same. Worse, he’s heading down a dark path where no one, including Boruto, could save him anymore with his obsession to protect Naruto and grow stronger than anybody else. Anyone who tries to sympathize with him gets rejected, turning him into a lone wolf whose fixation could threaten everyone around him.

Momoshiki Otsutsuki
Having an overpowered alien as an antagonist isn’t new in the shinobi world, but Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s appearance in Boruto didn’t exactly sit well with fans. Many were frustrated by the series’ decision to recycle the Otsutsuki Clan's threat instead of going back to the era where ninja from different hidden villages fought each other.
Moreover, Momoshiki Otsutsuki’s appearance in the series received almost no proper build-up, making his introduction poorly handled. If that wasn’t enough, Momoshiki was used as a plot device to accelerate Boruto Uzumaki’s power growth. In a remarkably short time, Boruto Uzumaki grew stronger than almost anyone else, a sharp contrast to the older generation of shinobi, who spent years mastering their skills through relentless training and hard work.
Code
Before the timeskip, Code was the primary villain of Boruto. Naruto Uzumaki and his allies in Konoha were extremely wary of him, as he carried the will of Isshiki Otsutsuki. He was a dangerous villain who could kill Naruto and his loved ones with his abilities, especially after Amado Sanzu removed his limiters.
However, once Boruto: Two Blue Vortex began, Code’s villainous role became a shadow of its former self. He looks like a joke now, for someone who pushed Sasuke to his limits and threatened the very survival of Konoha. Instead of redeeming himself, he was easily manipulated by those around him, especially Jura. Right now, Code’s whereabouts are unknown, but no one misses his presence.
Kobu
In recent chapters of Boruto, Lord Kobu, the chamberlain to the Fire Daimyo, has been annoying fans with his actions and decisions on Konoha. He appeared out of nowhere, slamming Shikamaru’s authority and meddling in matters far beyond his expertise, leaving readers frustrated at his needless interference.
Instead of making the situation better for Shikamaru and his allies, he continues to trigger political tensions that feel incredibly unnecessary. The worst part is that he complicates matters with biting remarks that leave Shikamaru scrambling. Because of this, many fans hope that Ikemoto will give Kobu a dramatic and satisfying exit after his constant interference.

Sakura Uchiha
For most of the Boruto manga, Sakura Uchiha is missing in action. Even after her husband has gone rogue, Sakura receives little to no exposure, leaving fans unhappy with how the series sidelines one of the older generation’s most capable kunoichi. In comparison to Sasuke and Naruto, Sakura’s role in Boruto feels minimal at best.
Moreover, in the current state of affairs in Konoha, Sakura is expected to take a more active role, yet she has never shown herself. While it’s true that she isn’t a combat ninja anymore and has been leading the medical institutions in Konoha, the village still needs her strength to fight alongside her daughter and her friends against the Shinju Clones.
Shino Aburame
One of the biggest issues in Boruto is the lack of exposure for the older generation of shinobi, and Shino Aburame is no exception. However, what irks fans even more is that, despite his unique abilities, Shino was reduced to a comic relief character that allowed the next generation of shinobi to make fun of him most of the time.
In other words, the Shino in Boruto is the exact opposite of the Shino in Naruto. Instead of thinking of creative ways to use Shino’s abilities in combat, the Boruto series ruins his character by ignoring his intelligence and talents that once made him a terrifying ninja to fight with.
Konohamaru Sarutobi
For many fans, Konohamaru Sarutobi is one of the biggest disappointments in Boruto, as the once-promising shinobi has been surpassed by nearly every member of the new Team 7 in strength. Even during times of crisis, he often ends up as the one who needs saving rather than stepping up to protect others.
For someone who wants to become Naruto Uzumaki’s successor, most fans are not impressed by Konohamaru’s qualifications. His actions fall short of the leadership and strength expected of him. He also has no memorable feats that prove his worth, making it hard to see him as a credible candidate to become the next Hokage.
Hinata Hyuga
Just like Sakura, Hinata Hyuga is severely sidelined in Boruto. All she does is take care of the Uzumaki household, spending her time managing the home while her combat skills and experience go unused. While there’s nothing wrong with Hinata being a committed housewife, the series fails to balance her domestic life with her role as one of Konoha’s strongest kunoichi.
Hinata was supposed to carry on the legacy of the Hyuga Clan, but she barely appears in the series. The Byakugan was also sidelined, making her once-feared vision irrelevant for most of Boruto until now that her son has awakened it. The worst part is that Hinata was sealed with Naruto, rendering her completely useless in the current arc.
Boruto is an action anime series that continues years after the events of Naruto, now in the shoes of the next generation - many of which are the children of the protagonists from the original series. Boruto follows the titular character, the son of Naruto, who seeks to impress his father. Together with the other ninjas-in-training, Boruto will battle to overcome trials and threats even more significant than his father ever faced.
