The following article contains spoilers for Naruto and Boruto.

Boruto has gone an interesting way by bringing both technology and the alien Otsutsuki clan into the story. However, at the end of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kawaki claims that the "Age of Shinobi" will be over. While it may not be entirely clear what he is referring to, there are a few possibilities.

Kawaki is one of the most intriguing characters in Boruto, though many fans dislike him because of his attitude. The story seems to be setting up an amazing development related to him, but we'll have to wait and see what happens next.

Naruto: Should Boruto Get A Reboot Without Fillers?

Boruto Part 2 is coming anytime soon, but should Studio Pierrot continue Boruto regarless of fillers or reboot the series?

What Is the Age of Shinobi in Naruto/Boruto?

When Kawaki talks about the "Age of Shinobi", he is probably referring to the period when shinobi first became a relevant military force, and remained so until the present in the series. Shinobi, or ninjas, emerged with the creation of ninjutsu by Indra Otsutsuki. Ninjutsu is actually a "corrupted" form of ninshu, a religion created by Hagoromo Otsutsuki, who believed that the use of chakra should be spread around the world in order to elevate people and usher in a new era of peace.

Indra, however, believed that chakra would be better used for combat than for achieving an elevated state of understanding. This led Hagoromo to look down upon his eldest son, and choose Asura Otsutsuki, his youngest son, as the heir to his teachings. The goal of ninshu was to connect the inner and physical energies. It is important to note that when Indra weaponized ninshu into ninjutsu, he was under manipulated by the Black Zetsu. Since Indra is the ancestor of the Uchiha clan, Itachi Uchiha's story resembles this, as he was also manipulated into massacring his clan to protect Sasuke.

Anyway, with the emergence of ninjutsu, many countries started creating their own shinobi forces, and ninja clans emerged as well. Eventually, the daimyo of the Land of Fire created the first hidden villages where ninjas reside. Other countries soon followed suit.

Why Is The Age of Shinobi Over?

Kawaki was probably referring to technology and the Otsutsuki clan as the main culprits of the end of the Age of Shinobi. Not only are shinobi embracing technology, but Amado is even trying something as insane as resurrecting his daughter with tech and Kawaki's Karma. Many fans speculate that Akebi will be extremely powerful because of this and might become an Otsutsuki. Some are even getting tired of Boruto overrelying on power scaling and the "artificial" creation of god-like beings in labs, turning every character into an overpowered enemy or ally.

The Age of Shinobi … shall end.

— Kawaki

In any case, Kawaki is suggesting that technology may soon advance to the point where ninjutsu is unnecessary because robots and technology will do everything, and everyone might become a powerful cyborg. Thus, shinobi won't be as important as they used to be as the Naruto universe prepares to enter an Age of Technology when ninjas will become obsolete because high-tech weapons will replace them. As for the Otsutsuki clan, they pose a threat to humanity and will do anything to become more powerful. Given that, the Otsutsuki clan will probably embrace technology if it can be used to their advantage. Kawaki wants to kill the Otsutsuki, who started the Age of Shinobi, so this is also a way to "bring an end" to it.

Boruto Could Be a Parallel to Japanese History

Some fans have noticed that Boruto may be looking to the history of Japan for inspiration. The daimyos are apparently losing their power as technology advances and non-state groups use their power to hinder the feudal lords. This seems inspired by Japan's modernization, which led to the end of the Tokugawa shogunate. However, it could also be inspired by the current world, where discussions about technology, non-state agents, the state, and traditions are common.

Interestingly, in such an ever-changing world, Boruto Uzumaki has remained true to his roots and still relies on ninjutsu. If this is part of the story's message, we will need to see what happens in the future. However, it seems they are making a point by choosing to depict the protagonist as someone who uses things like planetary chakra and seems to reject some forms of modernization.
