Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, referred to by many fans as Borderlands remastered, is out now, giving players the opportunity to revisit the loot-filled desert planet of Pandora. However, Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition isn't just a straight port of the original game, and in fact, brings a number of changes to the table that will change things up a bit for veterans.
One of the biggest Borderlands remastered changes is the addition of shift codes (stylized as SHiFT codes), golden keys, and the golden chest. Basically, Borderlands 2 added a system where players could get golden keys by inputting shift codes, and then use those keys on the golden chest to get special loot. This feature wasn't available in the original Borderlands, and so those playing Borderlands remastered may not know where to find the golden chest.
Here is where Borderlands remastered players can find the golden chest and how they can get golden keys to open it.
Where to Find the Golden Chest
Since the golden chest wasn't in the original version of Borderlands, it's understandable that fans of the original game may be unable to find it at first. The golden chest is located in the Fyrestone area of the Arid Badlands, and can be accessed very early on in the game. It's located not far from vending machines and the Catch-A-Ride station, so it should be hard to miss.
Once players know where the golden chest is in Borderlands remastered, the next step is acquiring golden keys to open it.
How to Get Shift Codes and Golden Keys
Fittingly enough, the golden chest in Borderlands remastered can only be opened with golden keys. Players can actually get a whopping 75 golden keys right off the bat if they have a save file for Borderlands: The Handsome Collection tied to their account. Some reports have indicated that simply buying Borderlands remastered is enough to get the free golden keys, but since we met both supposed requirements on our own account, we were unable to test it out at the time of this writing.
After this initial batch of free golden keys, Borderlands remastered players may be wondering how to get more. Well, the primary way to get golden keys in Borderlands remastered is to use shift codes. Shift codes are shared by Gearbox on social media and sometimes in other ways as well, like when it hid shift codes in the Borderlands 3 teaser trailer.
Once Borderlands remastered players have a shift code, they need to go to the Extras section in the main menu and click on "SHiFT." And that's all there is to redeeming shift codes in Borderlands remastered.
Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
