The Borderlands movie release date was announced after suffering from delayed production due to reshoots. When news first hit of adapting Gearbox's Borderlands game, fans could not have been more optimistic. Though video game movies have failed in the past, some diamonds in the rough have given viewers hope. Even more encouraging would be the creative minds behind the film. Cabin Fever director Eli Roth was known for putting his passion into his films and was the perfect choice to direct the film. Starring Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis, the Borderlands movie seemed like it would be high profile. And then things started going wrong. Tim Miller came in for Borderlands reshoots, causing a massive delay. First starting production in 2021, fans have waited years for the video game adaptation to be released. And now they finally get their wish. After announcing a tentative release year, Deadline revealed that Borderlands can be expected on August 9, 2024. Other stars reported to fill out the cast roster are Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Gina Gershon, and Edgar Ramírez. Lionsgate has been the production company behind franchises such as The Hunger Games, and if all goes well, this will be another impressive feat under the distributor's belt.[EMBED_TWITTER]https://twitter.com/Lionsgate/status/1682088119586426880[/EMBED_TWITTER]The stacked Borderlands cast list spans many notable characters from the games. Blanchett is starring as Lilith, the playable Siren character whose abilities include Phasewalking. Curtis is on tap to play Tannis, who the actor described as being in love with inanimate objects. Fans can also expect characters Roland, Scooter, and Claptrap to crop up. But with the omission of important characters such as Handsome Jack and Gaige, it does inspire questions about how the film will be adapted. In the first Borderlands game, the player chooses a character and is largely by themselves. The biggest relationship players have is with their handy robot friend. Significant character relationships and villains come in later games, which draws more attention to the discourse surrounding the games. With such an extended production time, many may have one important question on their minds. Will this adaptation even be good? Adaptations like The Last of Us have become essential viewing and a new marker for how well video game properties can go, but that is under perfect circumstances. It isn’t out of hand to say that Borderlands has not gone according to plan, especially with the strange circumstances revolving around Craig Mazin's writing credits. There is still a long time to get the film right, but with the writer’s strike ongoing, it doesn’t inspire confidence.Borderlands will be released on August 9, 2024. Source: Deadline
