Gearbox has launched a new August 2025 promotion that allows fans to grab a trio of Golden Keys across multiple versions of five Borderlands games. As is typically the case with Borderlands freebies, this summer offer can be claimed by redeeming Shift codes.

Shift is a digital platform that Gearbox launched ahead of the release of Borderlands 2 in 2012. The service is regularly used for hosting limited-time events, including Borderlands Golden Key giveaways.

The Borderlands 4 ECHO-4 bundle doesn't include the game.
Borderlands 4 Collector's Edition Looks Awesome, But Has One Disappointing Detail

A special Borderlands 4 bundle catches fans' eyes for not including one major component players might expect, despite its high price tag.

Continuing this trend, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has just taken to Twitter to announce yet another such offer tied to the Shift code "SFX3T-JSSJ3-3BBTT-J3BJ3-9XWXJ." Redeeming the key during the promotional period will allow fans to acquire three Golden Keys in supported Borderlands games of their choosing. The offer runs until next Thursday, August 14, Pitchford said.

The same Shift code can be redeemed multiple times, once for every supported game-platform combination.

According to The Best War Games's testing, the August 2025 code can be redeemed multiple times, once for each supported combination of a Borderlands game and platform. The promotion covers five titles, including the first three numbered entries in the franchise, as well as Tiny Tina's Wonderlands and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. With the sole exception of Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, the newly shared code is valid on the Epic Games Store, Steam, PlayStation Store, and Xbox Store. Borderlands: GOTY Edition supports all of these except the Epic Games Store, as the game itself is not available on that platform.

New Borderlands Code Grants Three Skeleton Keys

Each redemption grants players three Golden Keys for their selected game and platform. Given the structure of the giveaway, the August 2025 code can be redeemed up to 19 times if the player covers every supported game–platform combination. Since the giveaway is hosted via Shift rather than being tied to digital storefronts directly, it offers a unique benefit in that players are able to redeem the code even for game versions they don't own. Whenever they do get around to purchasing them, the keys will still be waiting for them. Social media reports from fans suggest some users have encountered technical difficulties preventing them from redeeming the new Shift code. However, these reports appear to be few and far between.

Where to Find Redeemed Golden Keys in Borderlands Games

The actual mechanics of using loot keys in Borderlands games vary by title. In the first two numbered entries, the redeemed keys go directly to the player's inventory and can be used at the Fyrestone (B1) or Sanctuary (B2) chests. In Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, they need to be claimed from the Shift Machine located in the center of Concordia. Meanwhile, Borderlands 3 sends the redeemed Golden Keys directly to the player's mailbox, which is a system that's also utilized by Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Gearbox has yet to confirm how the upcoming Borderlands 4 will distribute Golden Keys redeemed via Shift codes.
