Gamescom Opening Night Live kicked off with a bang by revealing Borderlands 4, the next entry in Gearbox Software's beloved looter-shooter franchise. Considering the dizzying commercial success of the previous Borderlands games, Borderlands 4 has always been a matter of "when" and not "if." But with seven years between the launch of Borderlands 2 and 3, franchise fans were never quite sure exactly when they'd be able to expect the game.
Recently, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford teased that a new Borderlands game announcement would be coming sooner rather than later. Still, no one expected the game to be announced at Gamescom, with its unveiling serving as the event's first big surprise.
Borderlands 3: All Playable Characters, Ranked
Borderlands 3 has four different Vault Hunters to choose from, each with their own unique skills. Here they are ranked from worst to best.
Gearbox Software and 2K Games revealed Borderlands 4 with a CG trailer that showed a burning phoenix in the sky and what appears to be longtime series setting Pandora crashing through some kind of field, sending a psycho bandit mask hurdling to the surface of an unknown planet. A robotic arm reaches out and grabs the mask, soon replaced by the Borderlands 4 logo and the game's confirmed platforms. As revealed by the Borderlands 4 reveal trailer, the new game will be launching in 2025 for PC (through both Steam and the Epic Games Store), PS5, and Xbox Series X, marking the first true next-gen installment in the fan-favorite series.
Borderlands 4 Trailer
There isn't much else that fans know about Borderlands 4 at the time of this writing. However, it has been confirmed that Borderlands 4, like previous Borderlands games, will indeed be a looter shooter. Borderlands 4 will once again have players take the role of a Vault Hunter, and once again, they will fight hordes of enemies and collect a ton of treasures and loot. Basically, Borderlands fans should expect Borderlands 4 to provide an experience that is similar to previous entries. That being said, there is one key way that Borderlands 4 is departing from past games in the series.
By and large, the Borderlands series has focused on Pandora. Borderlands 4 will be a change of pace, with the new game set on an "all-new planet." What exactly this new planet is called and how it differs from Pandora remains to be seen.
The announcement of Borderlands 4 will no doubt make Borderlands franchise fans happy, and it couldn't have come at a better time. The Borderlands movie has bombed at the box office, with many calling it one of the worst video game movie adaptations of all time. The announcement of Borderlands 4 should go a long way in helping fans forget the movie adaptation and focus on the game series instead.
