According to Take-Two Interactive, Borderlands 4 will be released after Grand Theft Auto 6. As more gameplay details about the upcoming action RPG come to light, fans are eager to find out when Borderlands 4 will appear on store shelves, but it looks like players may be waiting until the end of 2025.

Announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live in August 2024, Borderlands 4 promises to feature the same looter shooter gameplay that fans have come to expect while also incorporating some changes to keep things fresh. Set in a post-apocalyptic world in the distant future, the game will notably include the largest weapon selection in the series to date, with senior project producer Anthony Nicholson recently teasing "billions" of weapons and items for players to acquire during their journey. While some were eager to see the return of Handsome Jack, it's unclear whether this will come to pass, as Borderlands 4 will have a new villain dubbed The Timekeeper.

Borderlands 4 Focusing on One Element of Its Gameplay is Long Overdue

Borderlands 4 finally bringing one core gameplay element up to speed with its gunplay seems like a natural progression for the franchise.

In December 2024, Take-Two confirmed that Borderlands 4 would be released during the 2026 fiscal year, placing the game's launch between April 1, 2025, and March 31, 2026. The company has now offered an update (courtesy of Comic Book), stating that the game will be released after the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6. Currently, GTA 6 is slated for a Fall 2025 release, meaning that Borderlands 4 likely won't appear on shelves until October at the earliest. November and December are also possible, though major triple-A titles don't often launch during the last month of the year.

Borderlands 4 Will Be Released After Grand Theft Auto 6

During a quarterly earnings call this week, Take-Two confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 is still on track for a Fall 2025 release. Recently, a supposed release date leak for the game was debunked, disappointing legions of fans who began to believe that the game would launch in September. First revealed in 2023, Grand Theft Auto 6 is expected to be a landmark moment in gaming, with the title expected to bring in $3.2 billion in revenue during its first year on sale.

While fans wait for Gearbox to reveal a proper release date for the follow-up to 2019's Borderlands 3, the game's developers are teasing more and more about what players can expect on the planet of Kairos. Borderlands 4 will feature more in-depth skill trees, giving aspiring Vault Hunters more control over their character's build. New traversal mechanics will also be introduced, and the game will also be taking a step away from the series' typical style of toilet humor.
