Gearbox reveals a new community challenge for Borderlands 4 players to collectively achieve, offering a unique skin for Rafa, though there is a slight catch that players should be aware of. So far, Borderlands 4 has been fairly rewarding to players who pay attention to the game's social channels, with new challenges and Golden Keys being on offer fairly regularly.

As players have come to know with the series, Gearbox isn't shy about keeping its games updated with new content. Borderlands 4 continues this DLC tradition with a robust roadmap alongside smaller patches and the previously mentioned Golden Keys. The keys themselves, once redeemed through the Gearbox SHiFT website, allow players to open the golden chests situated in 4 locations in The Lockaway, Carcadia, Belton's Bore, and The Launchpad. However, players can also score free gear just by playing the game through new community challenges on weekends.

Rafa Players Will Want to Partake In this Borderlands 4 Community Challenge

Similar to the previous Borderlands 4 community challenge, Gearbox is giving players another goal to hit while playing this weekend. From September 26 through the 28th, Gearbox has challenged players to earn 20 million second winds as Rafa. A second wind is a unique mechanic in the Borderlands series, as players can earn a second chance to get back up after being downed by an enemy. After getting to 0 HP, players have a short window of time to get a kill, which picks them back up to fight another day, avoiding a costly respawn.

However, the catch with this week's community challenge is that it's only for Rafa players. While all four characters can earn second winds, the challenge only counts ones from Rafa specifically, which makes achieving the 20 million number slightly harder since you're discounting 75% of the characters. However, the reward appears to be worth it as Gearbox will be giving players access to the Savings Savior skin for the Borderlands 4's exo-soldier Rafa, inspired by his pre-release YOLT character short.

In addition to earning second winds, it's a big weekend for all Borderlands 4 players as Gearbox continues to tease a special announcement. At Tokyo Game Show, Gearbox Software is teasing the reveal of the first Borderlands 4 DLC character through a silhouette and a very short teaser which seems to show cards in the sand. The new character is expected to join the roster sometime in Q1 of 2026 when the Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned Story Pack launches.
