Gearbox Software has revealed that Borderlands 4 will be missing a couple of important features at launch. However, the plan is to introduce these Borderlands 4 features at some point after its September 12 release.
It has been six years since the controversial Borderlands 3 hit the shelves, and fans will be hoping the next iteration of the long-running looter shooter franchise is a marked improvement over the previous entry. In the lead-up to its release, Gearbox has been talking plenty about Borderlands 4, offering players a glimpse of what they can expect on September 12. At a bare minimum, Borderlands 4 looks to be learning the right lessons from Borderlands 3, but whether it can live up to the legacy of the first and second games remains to be seen.

Borderlands 4 Won't Include Cross-Save or Cross-Progression at Launch
In a post on Steam, Gearbox revealed that on Borderlands 4's launch day, cross-save and cross-progression will not be available to players. This means that account-based progress (such as unlocks and loot) and save files moving from one platform to another will not be possible on day one. The developer does acknowledge that "this may be frustrating for some players, and we hear you. This is on our radar, and we appreciate all of your feedback." So while it's sad it won't be possible immediately, it's good to know that the features are still planned for the future.
It's particularly disappointing news in a world where barriers between consoles are being broken down increasingly quickly. Exclusives are becoming increasingly scarce, and players are becoming more accustomed to playing their favorite games on any device they prefer. This makes features like cross-save and cross-progression all the more critical in the modern era of gaming. At least cross-play will still be available in Borderlands 4 on release.
With a few weeks left before Borderlands 4's release, expect even more news to ramp up about the game to build anticipation. Randy Pitchford expects Borderlands 4 to take franchise sales beyond 100 million, which would mark a gargantuan milestone for the series if it performs to expectations. Coming on the back of Borderlands 3 and the controversial 2024 movie adaptation, the franchise needs a critical hit at this juncture.
