According to Randy Pitchford, fans are going to be "very excited" about Gearbox Software's next Borderlands project. Borderlands has been a massively successful franchise ever since the first game released in 2009. The original game was supported by multiple DLC expansions and followed-up on by the even bigger Borderlands 2. Since then, Gearbox has released multiple Borderlands spin-off games as well as 2019's Borderlands 3, which fans had to wait seven years to play.
It's already been five years since Borderlands 3's launch, and so it's safe to say that franchise fans are growing hungry for the next installment. Borderlands 4 has not been officially announced at the time of this writing, but rumors have been swirling that the game is in the works. Gearbox's Randy Pitchford recently teased that the next Gearbox game will be announced sooner rather than later, and now he's said that Borderlands fans are going to be "very excited" about the project, whatever it is.
Speaking to TheGamer about the Borderlands franchise, Pitchford said, "Oh man, I don't think I've done a good enough job of hiding the fact that we're working on something. And I think people that love Borderlands are going to be very excited about what we're working on. These are fuzzy words, but sooner rather than later, we're going to be talking about what we've been working on, and I can't wait." While not confirmed, it seems that Pitchford is hinting at Borderlands 4. Of course, it's also possible that he is referring to a completely different Borderlands-related project, so fans should keep that in mind.
Borderlands Fans Are Going to Be Very Excited About What Gearbox is Working On
While Borderlands 4 is the likeliest candidate for Gearbox's next big Borderlands project, there's always a chance that the next game could be another spin-off. After all, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands was a big success, and so it wouldn't be surprising if Gearbox decided to create a follow-up to that next instead of Borderlands 4. There's also potential new installments in the Tales from the Borderlands series to consider. It's also possible that the new Borderlands project Pitchford is teasing could be something totally unexpected, so it will be interesting to see what exactly it is whenever the official announcement comes.
Borderlands fans still don't know what to expect from the franchise's next video game, but they still have reason to celebrate. The Borderlands movie will premiere on August 9, and while there are some apprehensive about the PG-13 rating and casting choices, there are also many who are very much looking forward to seeing the beloved game franchise translated to the big screen.
