Borderlands 4 fans can now claim a free in-game cosmetic, although getting it comes with one slight catch. This catch may be enough to dissuade some Borderlands 4 fans from bothering to claim the cosmetic, although for others, it will be no big deal.

With Borderlands 4's September 12 release date fast approaching, Gearbox's marketing campaign for the game continues to ramp up. Hype is growing about the game as the developer continues to reveal more about what fans can expect to see in Borderlands 4. It was recently confirmed that Borderlands 4 will have a Photo Mode, although it won't be in the game at launch. There's still plenty of time for Gearbox to unveil even more Borderlands 4 features, although hopefully, it keeps some surprises close to its chest for the game's launch.

Borderlands 4 Misses an Easy Layup the Last Borderlands Game Set Up For It

Borderlands 4 is making a lot of changes to the series' formula, but one of these could affect one of the last game's character reveals.

In a blog post on Steam, Gearbox revealed that Borderlands 4 fans who own the game can now claim the Hazard Pay weapon skin in time for its September 12 launch. There is a slight catch, though. To receive it, players must subscribe to receive newsletters and digital marketing using a SHiFT account, before linking their preferred platform accounts on the SHiFT website. Then, on Borderlands 4's September 12 release date, players can log into their SHiFT account in-game to receive the free Hazard Pay weapon skin.

Borderlands 4 Fans Can Now Claim a New Weapon Skin Before September 12 Launch

While it won't bother everyone, some may not love the idea of signing up for newsletters and digital marketing to get this Borderlands 4 skin. Fans don't need to be in any great rush to grab this cosmetic, though. According to the blog post, the offer ends at 11.59 PM PT on December 31, 2030, so any gamer who doesn't pre-order Borderlands 4 will still be able to get the Hazard Pay skin post-launch.

Being able to claim fancy skins is great, but the road to Borderlands 4's launch hasn't all been smooth sailing. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has made several comments about Borderlands 4's price tag that have left a sour taste in the mouths of many fans. For those who can't wait until September 12 to satisfy the looter-shooter itch, Borderlands 3 is currently available for just $2.99 (95% off) as part of the Steam Summer Sale until July 10.
