Summary

  • Blumhouse may buy rights to Saw franchise, potentially leading to Saw XI release.
  • Fans excited for potential revival of Saw series despite some disappointment with Saw X.
  • Choices for franchise future include reboot or continuation, with hopes for engaging new stories.

From a story about a college student who keeps waking up to relive the day that she dies to the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise, Blumhouse continues to be a huge name in the horror genre. The production company's 2025 releases include sequels to beloved movies such as M3GAN and The Black Phone and originals like Christopher Landon's creepy first-date-gone-wrong film Drop. Now, Deadline is reporting that Blumhouse could buy the rights to the Saw horror franchise.

After Saw X was released in 2023, fans thought Saw XI would come out in 2025. But, unfortunately, that isn't happening, and no one is certain that another movie about Jigsaw is still in the works. Blumhouse buying the rights is promising and interesting news. What does it mean for the dark and gruesome franchise, and what do fans want to see in another film?

If Blumhouse Owns The Rights To The Saw Horror Franchise, Could That Mean Saw XI Is Happening In The Near Future?

According to Deadline, Lionsgate has 50% of the rights to the Saw franchise, and Blumhouse is reportedly purchasing the rights that Twisted Pictures owned. Deadline noted that no Saw movie is in the works at this time.

However, if Blumhouse takes over 50% of the rights to Saw, that could mean that the long-awaited Saw XI could become a reality. Fans are hopeful about the announcement and shared their thoughts on Reddit. One Redditor wrote:

"They have a script and a full team ready to go for Saw XI if they want to start shooting ASAP... It will be interesting to see how quickly they got going. I’m happy. Tobin Bell gave one of the best performances of 2023 in Saw X."

Redditor @horrorfan555 also wants to see the beloved actor in another movie. They wrote:

"Please just one more movie Tobin Bell."

Redditor @Ok-Metal-4719 agreed:

"Glad it still has life, I’m curious to see what they do with it."

While there's an argument to be made that it might be time to end a horror franchise that already has 10 movies, Saw fans are still interested in this dark and gripping story. When the first Saw was released in 2004, audiences were stunned by the twist at the end and were shocked by every moment of Adam Stanheight's (Leigh Whannell) terrifying plight.

When Was Every Saw Movie Released?

  • Saw (2004)
  • Saw II (2005)
  • Saw III (2006)
  • Saw IV (2007)
  • Saw V (2008)
  • Saw VI (2009)
  • Saw 3D (2010)
  • Jigsaw (2017)
  • Spiral (2021)
  • Saw X (2023)

Although the Saw movies follow a formula since Jigsaw always comes up with terrifying traps, he's a compelling villain, and it would be a shame if there wasn't at least one more movie about him. Not everyone was impressed with Saw X and some felt it wasn't as interesting and fast-paced as the previous films. Some fans also didn't feel that the ending was as strong as previous films. But, since many feel that Jigsaw's story hasn't been wrapped up properly, it makes sense that Blumhouse would be interested in adding this beloved franchise to their roster.

Could Blumhouse Make A Saw Reboot Or Continue With Saw XI?

Although some feel Saw XI should be the last movie, Saw X told such an emotionally devastating story that it seems possible for the franchise to continue for at least a few more films. Now that Blumhouse is getting involved, horror fans are curious about what movie could be made next.

Redditor @TerryBouchon had an idea:

"needs a reboot IMO."

There seem to be two options for the future of the Saw franchise: a reboot of the entire franchise or Saw XI, which once had a September 2025 release date but was removed from Lionsgate's 2025 release schedule. Blumhouse has released several classic horror movie reboots, including Halloween and The Exorcist, with mixed results. Since the talented Mike Flanagan is directing an Exorcist movie for Blumhouse, many are optimistic that the next movie in the creepy demonic possession franchise will be more compelling than the last one. It would also be interesting to see Blumhouse's take on Saw. With a reboot, the franchise could go in a brand new direction and add some layered characters while still staying true to the gruesome and dark tone. Perhaps a new main villain could be connected somehow to Jigsaw/John Kramer's (Tobin Bell), which would help tie all the movies together.

However, Saw XI could still happen, and fans discussed some story ideas on Reddit. Several agreed that Dr. Cecilia Pederson (Synnøve Macody Lund) should take center stage in the next movie since she is John Kramer's main enemy. No matter what, Blumhouse's acquisition could be a positive thing for the franchise, and it will be interesting to see what form it takes.
