Summary

  • The Bloodborne PS1 Demake received a copyright claim on YouTube for a past video.
  • The claim followed days after Sony issued a DMCA takedown of a Bloodborne 60 FPS patch.
  • Both takedowns were conducted by MarkScan Enforcement on behalf of Sony.

A PS1-themed demake of Bloodborne was struck with a copyright claim, according to a social media post by the project's main creator. The copyright claim was made on a YouTube video about the Bloodborne fan project, which is the second claim that has been made about Sony's popular Souls-like game within a week.

Originally released in March 2015 exclusively for the PS4, Bloodborne is a collaboration between Sony and FromSoftware, directed by Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki. Set in the fictional, Victorian-era city of Yharnam, players take up the role of a Hunter as they face off with the city's denizens, who have been transformed into frightening monstrosities by a bloodborne sickness, with lycanthropy being the most common affliction. Since its original release, fans of Bloodborne and FromSoftware games have taken to social media to campaign for an official remake. However, some fans took it upon themselves to create projects that pay tribute to the game.

Three years after a PS1-themed demake of Bloodborne was released for free, the project's lead developer stated that a video received a copyright claim. According to IGN, a YouTube video about the Bloodborne PS1 demake was copyright claimed by MarkScan Enforcement, a company that Sony has hired to issue copyright claims and DMCA takedowns to protect the company's properties. The creator of the Bloodborne PS1 demake, Lilith Walther, shared the news on social media. Within a day of its release, Walther's creation was downloaded over 100,000 times on Itch.io. At the time of writing, the Bloodborne PS1 demake is still available for download on Windows PCs, with version 1.05 being the latest release. However, the copyright claim on the Bloodborne PS1 demake video was the second legal issue that Bloodborne fan projects received in early 2025.

On January 31, a fan-made, 60 FPS patch for Bloodborne received a DMCA takedown nearly four years after the project started. Although Bloodborne can be played on PS5 via backward compatibility, the game remains locked at 30 FPS. The 60 FPS patch's creator, Lance McDonald, stated that MarkScan Enforcement was also responsible for the DMCA notice he received. In response to the takedowns, McDonald speculated that Sony's DMCA takedowns of the 60 FPS patch and the PS1 demake could be in preparation for a potential Bloodborne remake and that the fan projects could interfere with search engine results.

Although former Sony leader Shuhei Yoshida has theorized about a potential Bloodborne remaster, neither Sony nor FromSoftware have confirmed anything about it. Only time will tell if players will return to Yharnam again.
