Summary

  • Bloodborne's player count remains strong even after eight years since its release, outperforming many recent game releases in terms of popularity.
  • The game's lifetime sales may potentially be in the sub-3 million range, but it has still convincingly exceeded Sony's sales expectations.
  • Despite its enduring popularity, there is still no indication that Bloodborne will be released on platforms other than PS4, despite rumors of a possible port or remaster.

Bloodborne is still boasting an impressive player count more than eight years into its release, as suggested by some newly compiled data. FromSoftware's Lovecraftian action RPG originally released to rave reviews in March 2015, with many players clamoring for a Bloodborne PC port ever since.

The fact that the iconic soulslike was a resounding success has been clear since its debut. After all, it only took a few weeks for Bloodborne to hit 1 million sales, with the game doubling that figure come September 2015. Since Sony never provided additional updates on its commercial performance, it's plausible that Bloodborne's lifetime sales remain in the sub-3 million range as of today. Nevertheless, the PlayStation maker has repeatedly reiterated that Bloodborne convincingly exceeded its sales expectations.

The game's staying power appears to be equally impressive, with July PSN user data compiled by third-party achievement tracker TrueTrophies suggesting that Bloodborne continues to outperform a wide variety of much more recent releases, ranging from Forspoken and Dead Island 2 to Wild Hearts, Like A Dragon: Ishin, and the critically acclaimed Dead Space remake. Although TrueTrophies was unable to deduce actual player counts, it did provide several points of comparison, including an estimate that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor only had 11.21% more PlayStation players than Bloodborne throughout July.

Meanwhile, FromSoftware's 2015 ARPG also attracted a 20.32% larger PlayStation player base than Dead Island 2 during the observed period. For added context, Dead Island 2 just became Deep Silver's biggest-ever launch back in May, amassing two million sales across all platforms. It would hence appear that most of those sales either didn't come from PlayStation owners or that not many PS4 and PS5 gamers have been playing the game in July, at least relative to the size of Bloodborne's loyal fandom.

Besides Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, the big 2023 releases that Bloodborne has yet to outperform include Diablo 4, Final Fantasy 16, Hogwarts Legacy, and the Resident Evil 4 remake, among others. And while it's dubious whether any of those titles will drop below Bloodborne's current PlayStation player count anytime soon, the fact that TrueTrophies ranks FromSoftware's soulslike as one of the top 200 most popular games on Sony's platforms more than eight years since its release is still a huge testament to its cult following.

The Dark Souls maker should be well-aware of Bloodborne's long-lasting popularity, not least because all PlayStation developers have access to precise player analytics. And though multiple past rumors pointed toward either a port or remaster of Bloodborne being in the works, there is still no concrete indication that the game is any closer to leaving the confines of its PS4 exclusivity than it was back in 2015.

Bloodborne is available on PS4.
