Bleach: How Strong Is Yoruichi Shihoin?

Yoruichi Shihoin has been a fan favorite character in Bleach, ever since she first made her full debut in her original form after Ichigo's fight against Kenpachi Zaraki. While little was initially known about her background and abilities, further exploration of her past, including her history with Kisuke Urahara and the Gotei 13 as a whole, revealed far more about why she was such a revered name in Soul Society.

Born into the noble Shihoin clan, Yoruichi was a prodigious talent who quickly rose through the ranks to become the Commander of the Onmitsukido (Stealth Force), and the Captain of the 2nd Divisio. Unfortunately, she was forced to defect from the Gotei 13 and flee Soul Society after the Hollowfication Incident orchestrated by Sosuke Aizen, in which her childhood friend Kisuke Urahara was framed as a culprit. Despite this, her reputation and strength endured, as she was among the fastest combatants in Soul Society and Bleach as a whole, with a keen eye for covert operations that exceeded her peers' capabilities by quite some margin.

The Fastest In Soul Society

One major reason why Yoruichi was able to rise to her previous rank in the Gotei 13 was due to her mastery of Shunpo — a movement technique practiced by Shinigami, which allows them to cover distances faster than the eye can see. Yoruichi was often regarded as the best Shunpo user in all of Soul Society during her time, and some even considered her the fastest in history. Although there is no definitive way to pit her speed against individuals such as Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto, or Tenjiro Kirinji, who were both extremely skilled practitioners of Shunpo, there is little doubt that her speed would be more than a match for them.

Shunpo is an essential skill for covert operations performed by the Onmitsukido, as the high speed movement it grants is vital to infiltrating enemy territory undetected. It also permits Shinigami to quickly and efficiently dispatch opponents with little struggle or spectacle, ensuring that their actions fly under the radar. Considering that most Shinigami in this Division excel at Shunpo, as seen with Yoruichi's successor Sui-Feng, it is even more impressive that Yoruichi herself was fast enough to take on an entire squadron with only Shunpo and hand-to-hand combat, defeating them in mere seconds with virtually no struggle.

Such feats are indicative of her proficiency at this combat skill, which forms the basis of her fighting style. While she must have wielded a Zanpakuto like most other Shinigami prior to her flight from Soul Society, Yoruichi has not used it at all in the main series. Her focus primarily veers towards Hakuda or hand-to-hand combat in conjunction with Shunpo, which complements the emphasis she places on speed and stealth in combat. Yoruichi is also famed for having created a number of her own techniques while combining these two combat skills — another reason why her name is so respected.

Enter Shunko

Aside from her mastery of Shunpo and Hakuda, Yoruichi is also very adept at using Kido, where she can cast mid to high level barrier and destruction spells effectively, without using any incantation, but perhaps not at the same level as Sosuke Aizen or Kisuke Urahara could. She can even use healing Kido, as well as protection spells, illuminating the commendable scope of her abilities in this respect. However, the most important application of her Kido mastery is when she combines it with Hakuda, to produce an entirely new form that surpasses her abilities when in her base state.

Known as Shunko, it is an advanced technique used by both Yoruichi and her former protégé Sui-Feng. Said to be the pinnacle of Hakuda combat, Shunko surrounds the user's body with Kido, driving it into their arms and legs to push past their physical limits. In Yoruichi's case, her limbs are enveloped in pressurized Kido taking on the form of lightning. The Kido can also be fired from her limbs for long range attacks. Besides the obvious boost to her speed and strength, Shunko augments her ability to neutralize an opponent's attacks.

When Yoruichi activates it, she gains a pair of lighting wings colored white, in line with the hue her Reiatsu takes on while in this state. She also possesses two additional forms with this technique. The first is dubbed Shunkō: Raijin Senkei, where the Kido forms a drum circle like that of a Raijin behind her back, allowing her to fire a condensed column of electrical energy to overwhelm her opponent. Shunkō: Raijū Senkei: Shunryū Kokubyō Senki, is the next stage of this transformation, merging her Shunko with her black cat form. The electricity engulfs her forearms and legs, creating paws and claws, while she gains a tail as well as cat ears made from electricity.

The Power Of The Flash Goddess

There is no doubt that Yoruichi is one of the strongest characters in the Gotei 13, if not one of the fastest due to her immense talent for Shunpo. Dubbed the "Flash Goddess" for this very reason, she developed a number of her own techniques with this combat skill, including Utsusemi, in addition to a few with Hakuda such as Taketonbo and Raioken.

Having mentored Sui-Feng, as well as Byakuya Kuchiki to some degree, there is no doubt that her abilities are on par, if not greater than them. She was also able to spar equally with Kisuke Urahara, as they regularly did while training in their youth, and even rose to the rank of Captain before he did, which speaks volumes of her strength and competence as a Shinigami.
