Prior to launch, there was much made about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's lack of a story campaign mode. The first mainline Call of Duty game with no campaign, some fans were understandably upset at its exclusion. However, if a new rumor is to be believed, it seems as though a co-op campaign was once in the works for the game.
An individual known by the username CallofNobodyCares took to Reddit, claiming to be a former Treyarch QA tester, and supposedly leaked some secrets about Call of Duty: Black Ops 4's development. According to CallofNobodyCares, Treyarch was working on a co-op campaign for Black Ops 4 until mid-2017, at which point it was scrapped as the studio focused its efforts on multiplayer and Zombies.
Black Ops 3 had a co-op campaign, so it wouldn't be crazy to assume Treyarch was developing something similar for Black Ops 4. However, it sounds like the co-op campaign Treyarch was apparently working for Black Ops 4 wasn't just a strictly co-op experience. It was a "2v2/co-op race" where two teams of two competed to see who could complete the story missions fastest. Throughout the campaign, the teams would also fight one another as well as team up on some occasions as well.
Treyarch reportedly created five missions for its campaign mode, but the team wanted to make "too many" missions and didn't have time to finish it. Whether or not that or any of the other information in the Reddit post is true is anyone's guess, but we caution Black Ops 4 fans to take this rumor with a grain of salt.
The user was never verified to have worked at Treyarch in the past, and it's possible that the post is just a hoax. However, the details about the innovative co-op campaign mode are oddly specific, and it's worth pointing out that the information in the post doesn't necessarily contradict what Treyarch has said about Black Ops 4's campaign mode in the past. Previously, the studio said that it never planned a traditional campaign for Black Ops 4, which leaves the door open for nontraditional campaign modes, like the one described by CallofNobodyCares on Reddit.
With Treyarch planning extensive post-launch support for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, it's possible that the co-op campaign could be added some time after launch, assuming there's any truth to the rumor. If not, maybe the idea will be revisited in a future Call of Duty title. Whatever the case may be, fans shouldn't expect Treyarch or Activision to comment on the rumor, so its validity will remain a mystery for the time being.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
