Creator of The Binding of Isaac Edmund McMillen has teased further details about why his upcoming title, Mewgenics, will be considered his "best work." McMillen has been a prominent figure in the indie gaming space for years now, after his appearance in 2012's Indie Game: The Movie chronicled the development of Super Meat Boy, which he then followed up with the hit title The Binding of Isaac.

The development of Mewgenics has been ongoing for over a decade. First announced in 2012 as a Team Meat project (with McMillen alongside Tommy Refenes), the game was intended to be a turn-based arena combat game. It was put on the back burner in 2014 and officially canceled in 2016. McMillen subsequently departed Team Meat and managed to acquire the rights to Mewgenics in 2018, bringing it back to life alongside developer Tyler Glaiel. In the years since, development has remained ongoing, with Mewgenics evolving to become the isometric tactical roguelike seen today. It's been a crazy journey, but the finish line is now in sight.

Will Mewgenics Be Better Than The Binding of Isaac?

McMillen continues to tease the game on Twitter, with one recent post claiming that he believes that Mewgenics "will be seen as my best work," linking to a Steam blog post detailing more about the game's Fighter class. The blog post itself is an interesting read, going into great detail about the difference between the active and passive abilities that players will be able to use with the Fighter class on launch. While more details are still being rolled out, early signs point to Mewgenics being a must-play roguelike game for gamers who love The Binding of Isaac, but it remains to be seen if it can top it in terms of quality.

Over the last few months, the Mewgenics duo of McMillen and Glaiel have been using Steam to show off deep dives into all the game's classes, giving players solid information about what they can expect when the game launches later this year. With The Binding of Isaac being one of the most successful indie games ever, it's not hard to see how Mewgenics could follow in its footsteps.

As of right now, the features promised by Mewgenics are indicative of an ambitious game. It currently boasts the promise of hundreds of hours of gameplay, with over 200 bosses and enemies to face off against while collecting hundreds of unique items along the way. It's a similar formula that resulted in the popularity of The Binding of Isaac - a solid gameplay loop with an element of randomness, giving each playthrough its own unique flavor. Currently given a vague release date of 2024, gamers should expect to hear even more about Mewgenics in the coming months.
