Spider-Verse has been one of the most significant franchises for Sony and Marvel. The movies have not only been popular among critics, they also received universal acclaim from audiences. Both films were successful at the box office and earned a good amount of money. In 2021, Miller and Phil Lord announced that they were working on the third film in the franchise and claimed that they would divide the film into two parts. However, a recent report suggested that the third film is getting delayed due to creative differences and might get scrapped. But it seems, the news of the film getting scrapped was just a rumor and Miller has finally come out to give the official announcement.
Spider-Man 4 To Be Helmed By a Veteran MCU Director
Marvel and Sony are eyeing a familiar director to helm the sequel to Spider-Man: No Way Home.
"Nothing has been scrapped," Says Producer
Taking it to Twitter, Spider-Verse producer and writer Miller finally broke the silence and addressed the rumors of Beyond the Spider-Verse getting scrapped. In his tweet, the producer categorically mentioned that the movie isn't scrapped, and the reels are coming "nicely." Miller wrote:
"Nothing has been scrapped. The reels are coming along nicely."
His comments came after a report (via Discussing Film) claiming that Sony has scrapped most of 'BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE' due to creative differences and will face a massive delay. As per the report, the third movie in the franchise wasn't scheduled to be released before 2027. However, Miller's comments have made it clear that these were just baseless rumors and nothing else.
Spider-Verse One of Sony's Biggest Moneymakers
It would have come as a massive shock if Sony decided to scrap a movie like Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. The first two movies in the series went on to become gigantic hits. The first film, Into the Spider-Verse, was released in 2018 and earned $384.3 million globally. On the other hand, it received universal acclaim from the critics as well. Moreover, it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2019. Meanwhile, the second film, Across the Spider-Verse, made its way into theaters in 2023 and earned a whopping $690.9 million worldwide. Just like the first film, it also received a nomination in the Animated Feature category at the Oscars but failed to win the accolade and lost to Hayao Miyazaki's The Boy and the Heron. Nevertheless, the loss didn't mean that the film was not good, it just meant that the movie got upstaged by a better film.
Miller's comments have made it clear that Sony and the makers are committed to bringing Beyond the Spider-Verse to the theaters as soon as possible. It would be a big blunder to lose a film like that which has the potential to bring in money and also receive accolades. Most importantly, fans are eagerly waiting for the franchise to continue after what happened at the end of Across the Spider-Verse. They want to see how Miles Morales will defeat the ultimate villain, Spot. It would be interesting to see how the makers would take the story forward and finish the storyline.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse are available for streaming on Disney+.
