Beyond Good & Evil was envisioned as the beginning of a trilogy, the sequel's lengthy development has delayed the release date several times. But despite the unpredictability of the sequel's production, Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition's newest mission seems to be adding context to the sequel's plot, especially in regards to Jade's past.

Ubisoft first hinted at a sequel to Beyond Good & Evil with a trailer back in 2008. After that, more than a decade passed before anyone heard word of the sequel again. Beyond Good & Evil 2 made a surprise appearance at E3 2017, where it was revealed that the sequel wasn't a sequel at all, but rather a prequel detailing Jade's life before the events of the 2003 title. Ubisoft hosted a Beyond Good and Evil 2 live stream in anticipation of E3 2019, but the presentation left many questions unanswered. So little information has been provided regarding Beyond Good and Evil 2 that leakers are being forced to fill in the gaps. Two years later, Netflix revealed it was working on a live-action adaptation of Beyond Good and Evil spearheaded by Rob Letterman, director of Detective Pikachu.
