The Better Call Saul series had many brilliant characters over its six-season run. While some had been crossed over from Breaking Bad, others were entirely new to the show. With storylines focusing on Saul, Mike, and Nacho for the early seasons, this led to many different characters from all walks of life being featured.
The best characters in Better Call Saul weren't always the ones who had the most regular of appearances. Sometimes characters could show up only for an episode or two and instantly light up the show, changing the dynamics and keeping it fresh for viewers. Being a show ultimately about criminals, there were plenty of traitor characters who redeemed themselves in later seasons featured.
10 Hector Salamanca
Hector Salamanca is a legacy character, after having been very popular across the five Breaking Bad seasons prior to his depiction in Better Call Saul. A boss of the Mexican Cartel, viewers see Hector before he ended up confined to a wheelchair and with a loss of his motor functions, which were Better Call Saul moments that added extra context to Breaking Bad.
While much had been alluded to in the past about Hector's backstory, the prequel spin-off allows a look-in to the history behind his and Gus' feud. There are some brilliant moments that Hector shares with Mike and Tuco in the earlier seasons and by the end of the show, he is in the position viewers know him from in Breaking Bad.
9 Gustavo Fring
One of the main villains of Breaking Bad, Gus Fring's involvement in Better Call Saul feels equally significant and shows how he started expanding and building his own criminal empire; breaking out of the shadow of the Salamancas and maneuvering into a position of power both in the legal and illegal world. Many episodes had some of Gus' best Better Call Saul quotes.
Better Call Saul does have many great moments with Fring. Despite the fact he is a very measured and private person, there are few moments where the character is challenged in any way to give audiences a meaningful look at his character development. BCS comes closest when Lalo attempts to have him killed. We see Fring at his most vulnerable and ruthless as a result.
8 Werner Ziegler
An original character to Better Call Saul, Ziegler only appears for a few episodes but makes a significant dent into the universe.
A confidant to Mike, he's probably the character we've come closest to seeing Mike treat as a friend. Ziegler's eventual exit from the show is one that is quite tragic for both him and Mike, which is the hallmark of great TV.
7 Chuck McGill
The older brother of Better Call Saul' s titular character, Chuck is a brilliant, well-respected lawyer but unfortunately a quite shoddy older brother. He was perhaps the best lawyer in Better Call Saul.
Over the course of the show we see him deal with mental health issues as well as the complete breakdown of his relationship with his brother. As the show progresses, however, his low opinions on Jimmy McGill seem to proven correct time and time again.
6 Howard Hamlin
Howard Hamlin could be considered an antagonist at times, particularly in the early seasons. As the show continues, Howard betters himself on a regular basis for the way he treated Jimmy at the behest of his older brother Chuck.
By the end of the show, Hamlin appears to be one of the few genuinely decent people around and one that meets a tragic end at the hands of Jimmy and Kim's cruel smear campaign. One of the biggest mistakes this Better Call Saul character made was thinking he could make Jimmy and Kim see the error of their ways.
5 Mike Ehrmantraut
A legend from Breaking Bad, Mike's involvement in Better Call Saul was much-loved by fans and managed to do a lot of expansive work on his backstory. There are plenty of great Mike quotes in Better Call Saul that viewers loved.
There are no shortage of badass moments from the fan favorite as he begins working for Gus later on in the show and has a lot of interaction with Jimmy and Nacho.
4 Nacho Varga
Referenced in Breaking Bad but never actually seen, Nacho has a lot of great moments in the show that seen him turncoat multiple times, leading to deadly consequences. Nacho is a Better Call Saul character who deserves his own spin-off.
A cool character who has a lot of interplay with both Jimmy and Mike, the show's writers, directors as well as the actor himself help to create a complex, sympathetic character that steals the show in many scenes.
3 Lalo Salamanca
Lalo is a character like none other, extremely capable, resilient, and deranged. Coming into the show late, Lalo stole the show in many ways and proved to be an instant hit with the viewers.
Lalo was only very briefly mentioned in Breaking Bad season 2, episode 8, so his inclusion in Better Call Saul offered room for mostly fresh storytelling for a show that is often confined to restrictions set upon by the parent show.
2 Kim Wexler
The wife of Saul, Kim was one of the main characters of Better Call Saul and was instantly adored by viewers. So much good work is done to flesh out her character over the course of the show that only further contributes to the quality of the show.
A glutton for punishment, Kim sticks with Jimmy through thick and thin for quite a while before eventually calling it quits, explaining her absence in Breaking Bad. Nevertheless, her importance to the overall story will always be recognized.
1 Jimmy 'Saul Goodman' McGill
With electric confidence, fast-talking, and an unbeatable drive to succeed; there's no way Jimmy McGill can't be the best character in his own show.
Jimmy McGill grows throughout the show and gets mixed up in many situations; some more dangerous than others. There's a real transformation to the character throughout the show that leads him to the place he's in during Breaking Bad.
