Summary

  • Tactical shooters span a range of genres but typically emphasize teamwork, patience, and strategy.
  • Games like Ready Or Not and Ground Branch offer immersive special-forces-themed experiences.
  • Rainbow Six Siege and SWAT 4 provide competitive and classic tactical shooter gameplay, focusing on team dynamics.

Military themes are common and popular in almost all genres of games, but especially so when it comes to FPS games and tactical shooters. However, certain games like those in the Rainbow Six franchise and the SWAT series take on smaller-scale themes and environments by putting players in the shoes of a Special Forces unit, often giving them control over their squadmates.

The following games focus on everything from intense combat and tactical decisions, to strategy and an immersive atmosphere. However, many feature a slow pace that encourages teamwork, precision, and patience above all else. Fans of the above should find something to enjoy here, be it a top-down tactical RTS game, or a nail-biting cooperative FPS.

Updated on March 24, 2025, by Harry Ted Sprinks: There is an abundance of tactical shooters on the market, with Ready Or Not being one of the most popular in recent years. These games are often team-based PvE shooters, though some games (such as Rainbow Six Siege) feature competitive online multiplayer. Despite this plethora of tactical shooters, it can be hard to discover games that theme themselves around SWAT and Special Forces. However, with many tactical shooters aging well, and games such as Rainbow Six Siege about to receive a major update, there's never been a better time to enjoy SWAT-themed games. This update adds Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 to the rost of SWAT-themed games.

11 Fast And Low

  • Platform: PC
  • Released: 2023
  • Developer: Urban Giraffe Games Inc.
  • Genre: Tactical Shooter

10 Hot Brass

A Top-Down Shooter With A Unique Aesthetic

  • Platform: PC
  • Released: 2021
  • Developer: Walk With Kings
  • Genre: Top Down Shooter

This top-down shooter has a unique aesthetic that not everyone will love, but the way it displays characters as different icons makes the game highly readable. This is important in context, where players are frequently tasked with making split-second decisions. One downside to this visual style, however, is the lack of immersion.

  • Genre: Strategy

No Plan B's gameplay revolves entirely around strategic planning. Once players give their team the go-ahead and the action starts, they lose control. While this leads to a lot of trial-and-error gameplay, watching the team enact a well-crafted plan to perfection provides a rewarding loop.

No Plan B uses a timeline system that allows players to plan out and synchronize the movement and actions of their squad members, carefully positioning and ordering them at specific intervals. Rainbow Six Siege: 10 Pro Tips For Expert Play

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege is one of the best online shooters on the market, but it can be overwhelming. Here are some pro tips for expert play.

Before every mission in Rainbow Six 3, players need to pick and customize their team members, all of which have different specialties and stats that distinguish them from the rest. Players can also place waypoints for their squads and trigger specific actions (like throwing grenades), making Rainbow Six 3 extremely tactical even before the bullets start flying.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 holds up today thanks to its blend of tactics and action, providing immersive and frequent firefights that, best of all, can be enjoyed in co-op. Vegas 2 is more of a game than a simulation, but the intense and visceral nature of its gunfights offer an immersive experience nonetheless.

The Vegas setting, while not the most important aspect of the game, provides a refreshing setting that sets itself apart from typically dismal war-zones and abandoned warehouses. However, it's the liveliness of the enemy AI and, again, the dynamic co-operative play, that allows Vegas 2 to remain relatively timeless.
