Leveling up in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is a little reminiscent of Soulslike games. There are a number of stats that players can choose to upgrade after leveling up, and these stats determine what gear they get and how strong players become in certain areas. It's a fairly simple system in practice, but for those who are unfamiliar with how games like these work, it can be a bit confusing.

The following is a guide that covers the recommended stats for each character archetype in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon, as well as the best gear you can get to justify using said stats.

The decision on which stats you choose to upgrade first depends on two things: your preferred playstyle and the equipment you want to wear. It's a given that warrior characters should get Strength, but not all warrior-esque items require Strength alone. You'll need prior knowledge of good items in Act 1 in order to know what stats you should level up first, so here are some suggestions.

Best Starting Warrior Stats in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon Early Warrior Build gear
  • Early Game Gear: Last Man Armor Set
  • Starting Stats: 8 Strength, 5 Endurance

For players who want to lean into the traditional warrior route, going 8 Strength then 5 Endurance is a good set of starting stats to go with, and that's all thanks to the Last Man Armor set. You can get the latter by killing Mallory, the NPC guarding the entrance to the Garden in the hidden dungeon under the Blood Lake.

This set comes with a helmet and a chestpiece, and together, they'll give you +6% increased Melee Damage plus enough armor to shrug off light hits. If you want to pursue a 2H warrior build, then increase your Strength to 11 so you can wield the Giant's Sword, which drops from Seanan the Giant in the Abandoned Village. You can pinpoint his location by picking up his bounty from Cillian's bounty board in the Horns Keep.

Alternatively, you can go with the Duel Knight set, which drops from Abrigor. You can find him lying against a broken pillar near the road leading to the keep. Beat him in a duel, and you'll get his armor set, which gives you a number of bonuses based on how low your Health/Stamina is. If you want to use Abrigor's weapons, pump your Dexterity to 2 and your Endurance to 7.

Best Starting Stats for Stealth Builds in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon Assassin's set
  • Early Game Gear: Assassin's Set
  • Starting Stats: 4 Dexterity, 8 Perception

If playing as a sneaky rogue is more your jam, then we recommend getting the Assassin's set from Silent Silia in the Abandoned Stronghold. This area is swarming with bandits, however, so you likely won't be able to get the armor set until you're strong enough to take them all down.

The Assassin's set increases your Sneak Damage by 20% when all three pieces are worn. Pair these with the twin Wolf's Fang daggers from Silent Silia to get another 3.0x multipler to Sneak Damage. If you want to be a stealth archer, you can get the Spiteful Arch bow from a ruined building in the rocks near Smuggler's Bay to the east of the Ruined Broch.

The Wolf's Fang daggers require 7 Dexterity while Spiteful Arch needs 5 Dexterity and 3 Practicality.

Best Starting Stats for Mages in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon

Tainted Grail The Fall of Avalon Spellslinger set
  • Early Game Gear: Spellslinger set
  • Starting Stats: 7 Spirituality

The simplest of all three major character archetypes is the mage. In the beginning, all you need to do when playing a pure spellcaster build in Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is get your Spirituality to 7. This is so you can wear the Spellslinger set and use Thunder Lash, which is arguably the best spell in Act 1.

The Spellslinger set gives bonus mana regeneration, 20 extra mana, and a whopping 60% increase to Spell Power, and all you need to wear it is 6 Spirituality. As you level up, raise your Spirituality to 11 so you can wear the Battlemage's Hood, which gives you 10 bonus mana and 15% more Spell Power.

You can find the Spellslinger set in a locked chest in a small, unmarked bandit camp northeast of the Abandoned Stronghold. Meanwhile, the Battlemage set is inside another locked chest in the Tomb of the Good Druid, which is far to the north of the Horns Keep.
