Sony's PlayStation Plus Extra subscription gives players access to games that cover most needs. The service has lengthy RPGs like Cyberpunk 2077 and Skyrim, shorter action games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and competitive multiplayer titles like For Honor. There should be something for just about anyone, and that includes co-op.
Local co-op and split-screen games encourage friends to come together for a night in front of the TV, and the best examples of these releases on PS Plus are mentioned in this article. However, online co-op is also popular, and Sony's subscription service does not neglect this feature. What are the best online co-op PS Plus games to play with friends?
Updated January 26, 2026 by Mark Sammut: We have added a quick picks section to make it easier to pick something to play.
Games that only support online co-op will be prioritized since local co-op titles are highlighted in a separate article. That said, a few exceptions that support both local and online co-op will be included.
Also, while quality matters, games are ranked by other factors as well. For instance, recent additions to PS Plus will be highlighted first.
Quick Picks: Best PS Plus Online Co-Op Games To Play Right Now
While we will dive into the individual games in a moment, let's first take some time to put together a selection of quick recommendations. The goal of this section is to help readers who are just looking for something to play right now, and they would rather not dive deep into the games themselves. To try to cast a wide net, I will be including multiple categories, along with one top pick and the reason behind its selection.

1 Grand Theft Auto Online
The Biggest Online Co-Op Game On PS Plus
Grand Theft Auto Online
- Released
- October 1, 2013
- Developer(s)
- Rockstar North
- PS Plus Availability
- Extra & Premium
- Genre(s)
- Open-World, Action
- Platform(s)
- PS5, PS4, PS3, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC
Coming and going as it pleases, Grand Theft Auto 5 has returned to PS Plus Extra, just a few months after it was removed. On the one hand, this makes it slightly difficult to get into the game's online portion, out of fear that it might leave quicker than other PS Plus games. Conversely, GTA is always a big deal, and repeat arrivals do not dull its appeal.
24 Best 4-Player Co-Op Games
There are countless 4-player co-op games available for gamers to check out. These, however, are easily among the best.
If you are solely into the single-player side of things, GTA Online might be, in your own opinion, the worst thing to happen to the franchise; however, if you are part of the ecosystem that makes up Rockstar's eternal sandbox, then you have a game that has been going strong for more than a decade. Even with GTA 6 on the horizon, it does not seem like GTA Online will be going away anytime soon.
You can mostly play this mode in whatever way you prefer, and it is up to you whether you engage actively with other players. If you do go down that route, GTA Online has a plethora of co-op missions and heists that will keep you busy and make you rich in the process. It goes without saying, but GTA Online is more fun with a crew.
2 Insurgency: Sandstorm
A Popular Co-Op Tactical Shooter (That Also Has PvP)
Insurgency: Sandstorm
- Released
- December 12, 2018
Tactical shooters live and die on the success of their competitive modes, which usually involve a degree of cooperation since they often divide players into teams. However, Insurgency: Sandstorm goes the extra mile by having multiple modes dedicated to PvE co-op, and they are not an afterthought. Not only are the modes fairly diverse from each other, but they are arguably more popular than their PvP counterparts, although you should be able to find matches in the latter without too much issue.
Compared to a few other co-op FPS games, Insurgency: Sandstorm is slightly more niche and challenging, which extends to the AI enemies faced in the PvE modes. Consequently, it might take you a couple of hours to really come to grips with the gameplay's flow, but once you and your friends grow comfortable, modes like Checkpoint and Survival can be incredibly addictive.
3 Abiotic Factor

- PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PC
PS Plus Extra has received a couple of great Day One games in 2025, including August's fantastic Sword of the Sea. However, if we are talking exclusively about titles that support online co-op, Abiotic Factor is in a league of its own. After a spell in early access, Deep Field Games' masterclass made its full debut on PC and consoles, and it is about as close to a perfect cooperative experience as PS Plus subscribers are likely to get. Set in an underground facility that is way weirder and bigger than it initially seems, Abiotic Factor is about surviving and thriving with your mates, exploring the ever-expanding universe while also creating a home that you call your own.
Played from a first-person perspective, you will spend your time preparing for expeditions/missions, investigating cool areas filled with alien monsters, satisfying basic needs like hunger and exhaustion, and just chilling with your mates. Abiotic Factor especially nails the latter, as the game does a stellar job of blending action with downtime where you can just exist as part of your group.
4 Ghost Of Tsushima: Legends
Mythological-Leaning Co-Op Spin-Off Game
Ghost of Tsushima

- Developer(s)
- Sucker Punch
- Number of Players
- 2-4
- PS Plus Availability

- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5
Ghost of Tsushima is a fantastic action-adventure game with a robust single-player campaign. A few months following the base title's debut, Sucker Punch dropped Legends, a co-op side experience deep enough to justify a standalone release. Along with common modes like Survival, Legends also comes with a Story that guides two players through roughly 6 hours of content.
The 60 Best Local Co-Op & Split-Screen Games You Can Play on the PS5 (2025)
Although couch co-op isn't as common as it once was, there are still plenty of great local co-op and split-screen games for the PlayStation 5.
Legends has four classes: Samurai, Ronin, Assassin, and Hunter. Each one fits an archetype and has a specific role they should be fulfilling in combat scenarios. While some options like the Samurai are viable for solo or two-player runs, classes like the Ronin are designed with support in mind. Legends might just be the best PS Plus online co-op game.
5 Wizard With A Gun
Unleash Magical Chaos With A Friend (Or Friends)
Wizard With a Gun
- Released
- October 17, 2023
- Developer(s)
- Galvanic Games
- Number of Players
- 1-4
- PS Plus Availability
- Extra & Premium
- Genre(s)
- Twin-Stick Shooter
- Platform(s)
- PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 5
Originally allowing only two players, Wizard With A Gun eventually added 4-player co-op, helping to more than double the mayhem you can unleash with a wand that has a knack for firing bullets. This game's concept is quite simple, as you are challenged to complete 5-minute loops while surviving within a sandbox. You will be constantly collecting resources to try and craft new spells, all the while unlocking new areas and gradually expanding your reach. The gunplay is straightforward but satisfying thanks to the wide range of cool bullets, and the gameplay is also smooth.
Wiziard With A Gun is more than playable solo, but you will really want to enjoy this with a friend (or multiple). Co-op makes exploring the sandbox far more enjoyable, as it can get a bit monotonous when you are traveling alone. The screen rarely gets too chaotic to keep track of everything, so the more, the merrier.

- 1-4 Online Co-Op
EDF has never wavered in its desire to provide shlock-style action, and Earth Defense Force 6 is one of the best entries in the franchise. Now, to set expectations for newcomers, these games are silly camp, along with being low-budget compared to most established series. However, EDF's brilliance lies in its simplicity, as you just spend all your time shooting at insects and aliens.
Solo runs are fine and possible, but co-op is 100% the way to experience these campaigns, which are long and repetitive. With four classes and a plethora of powerful weapons and mecha, EDF 6 is an absolute blast with friends, as you can just enjoy each other's company while destroying armies and cities.
7 Warhammer: Vermintide 2

A popular first-person action game, Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is celebrating its five-year anniversary in 2023. Despite its growing age, Fatshark's release is still reasonably active, and it is arguably the best action-oriented Warhammer game of the last decade. Vermintide 2 pits the Heroes of Ubersreik against wave after wave of rat-themed enemies, showering them with loot if they manage to survive.
While the vanilla version only has 13 missions (+4 from free updates), the stages are meant to be repeated endlessly as players upgrade their class and weapons. Vermintide 2's five playable characters are wildly different from each other, ensuring most people find someone who suits their preferences.
8 The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope
Online Co-Op Is A Different Experience Than Local
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope
- Released
- October 30, 2020
- Developer(s)
- Supermassive Games
- PS Plus Availability
- Extra & Premium
- Platform(s)
- Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5
- Genre(s)
- Survival Horror
PS Plus Extra used to have a wider selection of The Dark Pictures Anthology games, but Little Hope is the only one that is currently part of the service. While mainly known for its local co-op that lets up to 5 players have a cool movie night, online co-op is limited to just two people, with each one taking on different characters and making choices that impact their partner.
Although labeled as horror, Little Hope is not a terrifying game by any stretch of the imagination, making it a decent option for both genre veterans and newcomers. While the gameplay is quite simplistic, the focus is on the decisions made by each player, all of which contribute to determining which of the 5 characters will survive.
9 Returnal
Cool Co-Op Option In An All-Around Brilliant Game
Returnal

- April 30, 2021

- Housemarque
- Number of Players
- 1-2

Housemarque knows a thing or two about co-op. Dead Nation, Resogun, and Alienation all make good use of the feature, and they support both local and online connections. The developer's most recent project, Returnal, did not launch with multiplayer, but an online two-player co-op option was added as part of the Ascension update. Thanks to this addition, players can now join forces to take on the game's roguelike challenges, and there is the option to use a public or private server.
Best Co-Op Games On Steam To Play Right Now
From online multiplayer titles to local masterpieces, Steam has plenty of fantastic co-op games that should be played in 2026.
Returnal is challenging, and co-op does not necessarily make the experience easier. However, it does introduce a revive option into the gameplay loop, granting players a second chance. Otherwise, co-op provides essentially the same core experience as solo runs, albeit with two Selenes rather than just one. As the base package is fantastic, the same can be said about Returnal's co-op.
10 V Rising
Summon Your Vamp Friends And Create A Clan
V Rising

- Number of Players
- 1-10 (Co-Op)
- PS5 Release Date
- June 11, 2024

- PC, PlayStation 5
V Rising's co-op is a bit different and is closer to something you might find in an MMORPG. Basically, anyone can create a server-specific clan that holds up to 10 members, who can then play together as they want. Public servers are easy enough to find, but you can also host one if you want to make sure that nobody unwanted will join in with your friends.
Although containing plenty of online elements, including PvP, V Rising allows players to decide how they want to interact with them, and you can just treat the campaign as a PvE action RPG that can be enjoyed solo or in co-op. For the game itself, V Rising blends survival, building, and hack and slash to create a pretty complete experience that is hard to beat. As a vampire, you get to run your own castle (and that goes for every member of your clan).
