After 14 years of anticipation, the indie roguelike Mewgenics finally launched on Steam to critical acclaim in early February, becoming one of the breakout hits of the year. Currently, it holds a Very Positive rating on the platform with over 12,000 reviews—a whopping 92% of those reviews having positive remarks about the game. Mewgenics also boasts a Top Critic Average score of 89 on OpenCritic, with 93% of critics recommending it, making it the highest-rated game of 2026 so far, right in front of Nioh 3, Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven, and Perfect Tides: Station to Station.

Developed by The Binding of Isaac co-creator Edmund McMillen and designer Tyler Glaiel, Mewgenics takes roguelike gameplay to the next level with strategic combat and cat-breeding systems for a complex, emergent experience that players have already poured hundreds of hours into. Early sales and player engagement broke records for indie games, and the title made up its development budget within hours of its release. Now, with so much momentum on PC, the question of whether Mewgenics will come to consoles has been raised. As it turns out, that question has an answer, as McMillen has responded with an emphatic "yes" during a fairly recent AMA on Reddit ahead of the game's launch (via NintendoLife)—and the frontrunner in that conversation happens to be the Nintendo Switch 2.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Is the Frontrunner for Mewgenics' Console Port

According to McMillen's comments during the Reddit AMA, it was confirmed at the time that the team was trying to decide on a publisher for a console version of Mewgenics, and that, among currently available hardware, the "Switch 2 seems like the frontrunner right now." The final decision will ultimately come down to the publisher's involvement and support, but the Nintendo Switch 2 does seem like the console that makes the most sense for the game, given its style and audience.

That's not surprising either, considering the Nintendo Switch's historically strong support for indie games and its hybrid handheld nature. Mewgenics is the type of game that would fit exceptionally well on a handheld console, and the fact that the AMA was held on a Steam Deck subreddit and is verified for the device affirms that even more. McMillen also confirmed that "a lot of the people who reviewed [Mewgenics] did so on Steam Deck."

There's currently no official release date or firm confirmation of other platforms like PlayStation or Xbox, though a broader multi-platform rollout for Mewgenics isn't off the table. In reply to a recent post on X by user @ryewilky, the creator stated that "at this point it might be in dev for all systems." That's far from a definite, but it does make a multi-platform console launch for Mewgenics more likely.

Beyond the console port, McMillen and Glaiel have also confirmed plans for paid DLC expansions for Mewgenics in the future, although these are still in early conceptual stages. The team has expressed a desire to better understand player preferences before committing to content direction, suggesting additional features may roll out over a longer timeline.

As for an exact window for Mewgenics' console release, McMillen has been careful not to promise anything outright, with one answer even being as vague as "a year? 8 months...more? No idea." Perhaps a late 2026 Switch 2 launch isn't off the table if the stars align, but fans of the game who would love to play it on something other than a Steam Deck or desktop PC are undoubtedly eager for that announcement. For now, the Mewgenics story continues to unfold, where a long-awaited indie dream has finally been realized, making its mark on 2026, and a promising step into consoles with Nintendo's newest hardware leading the way.
