New Lovecraftian horror game Dredge is getting great reviews so far, and luckily, it will soon be available on every major gaming platform, including PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. There are many Lovecraftian horror games out there, but Dredge may be one of the most unique takes on the concept date.
While it may sound odd on paper, Dredge is a horror fishing game at its core. The game has players catching and selling fish and purchasing upgrades, all with a Lovecraftian horror backdrop. Its horror elements and mysteries have helped elevate it above other fishing games on the market, with many critics praising Dredge as being one of the surprise hits of 2023 so far.
Anyone interested in Dredge should note that it's scheduled to launch on March 30 for basically all gaming platforms. It has earned mostly positive reviews from critics so far, with an impressive 83 overall rating on OpenCritic based on 36 reviews so far. It's quite likely that more reviews for Dredge will be submitted in the near future, which could cause the game's overall review score to fluctuate in one direction or another, but regardless, it should still stand as one of the highest-rated new video game releases of the year.
Discounting remasters like Metroid Prime Remastered or remakes like the recently-released Resident Evil 4 remake, Dredge is the seventh best-reviewed game of 2023 based on its current rating. It is currently the highest-rated new horror game of 2023, but again, that is discounting games like the aforementioned Resident Evil 4 remake and the Dead Space remake that released back in January. As far as original experiences go, Dredge is leading the charge for the horror genre in 2023.
That being said, some critics have not been quite as impressed with Dredge's horror elements, feeling that it didn't embrace the genre enough. Regardless, fans can decide for themselves if Dredge should be counted among the best horror games of 2023 if they decide to play it later this week. At the time of this writing, Dredge has not been confirmed for any subscription services like PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass, but its pre-order price is an understandable $24.99.
Even if Dredge doesn't scratch the horror itch for some fans, the reviews indicate that it's still a very good game. Plus, the remakes for Dead Space and Resident Evil 4 should be more than enough to keep horror fans satisfied for now.
