17 Most Iconic Anime Characters With An Eyepatch

An eyepatch can tell a lot about an anime character's past. These characters are famous for concealing one of their eyes.

Thanks to the series' thrilling stories and complex characters it became one of the most beloved series of all time with one of the most passionate and vocal fan bases. It's easy to see why this series has such a stranglehold on pop culture to this day, with Boruto still going strong as the ninja world continues to be built upon. There are many great female characters in Naruto who are memorable in their own right that fans have slowly grown attached to.

Updated October 10, 2024 by Rhenn Taguiam: While Boruto and Kawaki also take front and center of the pages of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, it seems the intensity of their rivalry will soon be matched with the intrigue surrounding Sarada Uchiha’s hidden Mangekyo Sharingan abilities and Himawari Uzumaki being a new vessel of the Nine-Tails. With Ino Yamanaka becoming another central figure from the OG series in the Boruto series, fans might be wondering who else in the original anime and manga may have a bigger role in Boruto’s fate.

Despite the popularity of a lot of male characters in Naruto fandom, female characters are no slouch in helping Naruto and his friends grow into the characters they are today. On top of mainstays such as Sakura Haruno and Hinata Hyuga, other iconic female characters in the franchise include a movie star, another Hyuga family member, and Sakura’s popular “inner” persona.

1 Koyuki Kazahana

The First Look Into Life Beyond Ninjas

Hanabi Hyuga
  • Debut: Naruto the Movie: Ninja Clash in the Land of Snow (Movie)

Making her first appearance in the first Naruto movie, Koyuki Kazahana at first glance seems like the generic movie-only character whose life will be changed by the appearance of the shonen protagonist. However, beneath Koyuki’s cold exterior is a surprising depth for a film-exclusive leading lady - she was once the daughter of a daimyo whose murder forced her into hiding, with her new life transforming her into the melancholic actress Yukie Fujikaze.

As fans will soon learn, Kakashi saved a young Koyuki during his early ANBU days, and an even younger Koyuki always dreamt of experiencing spring. While Koyuki’s role in the story is that of a damsel in distress, she’s also among the first glimpses Naruto fans would have of the daimyo - or feudal lords in charge of countries in their universe. Moreover, Koyuki’s presence as a movie star further cements the technological advancements in the early days of Naruto - this time adding film theaters to other contemporary technologies such as comms.

2 Hanabi Hyuga

Caring Sister To Hinata, Determined Hyuga Heiress

Koyuki Kazahana
  • Debut: Byakugan Battle - Hinata Grows Bold! (Episode 46 of Naruto)

Not much is revealed about Hanabi Hyuga throughout the early part of the Naruto series, except perhaps for the fact that she’s the doting sister to Hinata, who at the time was the meek heiress of the Hyuga clan. It’s during an intense sparring session that Hanabi’s early displays of combat prowess impressed the family, leading to her appointment as a more deserving inheritor to their legacy.

Whereas Hinata is kind and gentle, Hanabi’s more determined nature made the clan see her as a more worthwhile heiress - something Hinata didn’t hold against her. While on the sidelines most of the time, Hanabi is considered among the most talented in the clan - perhaps rivaling or even surpassing her cousin Neji, a prodigious genius, in terms of her mastery of the Gentle Fist. In the Boruto series, Hanabi is revealed to be Team 15’s strict but rather caring teacher.

3 Inner Sakura

A Disturbing Persona Not Explored Enough

Inner Sakura
  • Debut: Enter - Naruto Uzumaki (Episode 1 of Naruto)

Although coming from a clan with no special heritage, Sakura Haruno proved her talent and dedication can make her stand alongside her prodigious peers - Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha - as members of Team 7. While Sakura ends up being one of the world’s best medical-nin, she did have humble beginnings as a genin previously known for her infatuation toward Sasuke…and a vicious Inner Sakura.

Revealed as early as Episode 1, Inner Sakura served as a manifestation of Sakura’s true feelings - especially in situations when she had to “display” something different. Such were the repressed thoughts in Inner Sakura that she was “powerful” enough to stop Ino Yamanaka’s signature Mind Body Switch Technique. Inner Sakura rarely appears in Part 2 onwards, which was explained as being due to Sakura being more confident with speaking her truth. While Inner Sakura’s “disappearance” had quite the wholesome explanation, it would be interesting for Inner Sakura to have been a mainstay in the series - especially with the Naruto female cast being rather underdeveloped compared to their male counterparts.

4 Samui

The Leader Of A Team From Kumogakure Named After Her

Samui Naruto
  • Debut: Surpassing the Master (Episode 156 of Naruto: Shippuden)

The leader of Team Samui, who prefers to let her actions speak instead of her words, Samui makes a strong impression despite not having a lot of screen time in the series. She's a powerful kunoichi who plays a major role in the Fourth Shinobi World War, fighting against the impressive duo of Kinkaku and Ginkaku before eventually being absorbed by Benihisago.

Her design may be unnecessarily bold, but Samui doesn't take long to show her skills and put all these discussions to bed. The Raikage clearly holds her and the other two members of her squad in high regard, sending them on sensitive missions that only the most competent shinobi should be tasked with handling.

5 Hana Inuzuka

A Medical Nin From Kiba's Clan

Hana Inuzuka in Naruto Cropped
  • Debut: Beyond the Limit of Darkness and Light (Episode 79 of Naruto)

The Inuzuka clan doesn't get a lot of attention in the series, but fans were still glad to see characters like Hana get their time to shine. She's a medical nin with impressive abilities who uses her hounds to aid people and mend their injuries. She's come to save Konoha in its time of need, such as when Orochimaru launched an assault on the village at the end of the Chunin Exams arc.

She serves as an important medical-nin during the war, aiding soldiers while also using the patented Fang Rotating Fang attack with her brother when White Zetsu infiltrated the premises. This combination of brawn and restorative abilities makes her a valuable shinobi that Konoha is glad to have on their side.

6 Fu

The Jinchuriki Of Chomei, The Seven-Tails

  • Debut: Declaration of War (Episode 205 of Naruto: Shippuden)

The fates of the Jinchuriki make for a pretty sad tale, with the majority of these characters being abducted by Akatsuki and slowly having their Tailed Beast sucked out until they eventually pass away. Such was the fate that awaited Fu, whose chirpy and happy-go-lucky personality didn't dissuade the Akatsuki from carrying out their plans.

In the Fourth Shinobi World War, it's revealed that this character could use the Hiden: Hiding in Scale Powder technique, which flashed so bright that it could blind her foes. It's a unique technique that isn't used by any other shinobi in the series, which makes for an interesting fact and an even more impressive spectacle.

7 Rin Nohara

Obito's First Love Whose Death Sparked His Downfall

Rin Nohara Naruto
  • Debut: Kakashi Chronicles ~ Boys' Life on the Battlefield ~ Part 1 (Episode 119 of Naruto: Shippuden)

Rin, Kakashi, and Obito are the trio under Minato who are given some tough tasks during a time of war. During one of these missions where Obito is considered missing, Rin is captured by Mist Village ninja, who turn her into a walking time bomb by forcing her to become Three-Tails Jinchuriki.

To prevent Konoha's destruction, Rin steps in the way of Kakashi's Chidori and makes the ultimate sacrifice. This sight is witnessed by Obito, who descends deep into despair and decides to walk on a path of darkness as he becomes a vengeful spirit of hatred.

8 Karin

One Of Orochimaru's Experiments Who Joined Sasuke's Group After His Defection

karin a girl with red hair andd glasses
  • Debut: Zabuza's Blade (Episode 115 of Naruto: Shippuden)

A lot of people are rightfully irritated by Karin's character for having no personality other than being a hothead and having feelings for Sasuke, which pretty much makes her an evil version of Sakura. She also has healing abilities, further cementing this comparison.

Still, there are times when Karin has her time in the limelight. She's far from a well-written character, but being a part of Sasuke's group does let her remain relevant for quite some time. There's also a rather interesting moment for the character when she's imprisoned by Konoha after Sasuke betrays her in a bid to attack Danzo, which causes her feelings for Sasuke to get all messed up.

9 Tayuya

A Member Of The Sound Four

Tayuya in naruto
  • Debut: Zero Hour! The Konoha Crush Begins! (Episode 68 of Naruto)

Even though Tayuya's time in Naruto was fairly short, she did make a significant impact on the story. One of the strongest genjutsu users in Naruto, she has powerful and unique abilities, including her summing technique that allows her to summon deadly creatures during battles.

10 Karui

A Member Of Team Samui Who Later Marries Choji Akimichi

Karui in naruto
  • Debut: Surpassing the Master (Episode 156 of Naruto: Shippuden)

Karui is one of the most loyal characters in Naruto and one of the few who is not from the Hidden Leaf Village. Naruto fans quickly fell in love with this female ninja thanks to her courage, unbeatable determination, and fighting spirit.

One of Karui's most admired qualities was her strong will and fierce loyalty she showed toward her friends. Karui would always think for herself, and she was never afraid to speak her mind and make decisions based on her own opinions. While Karui was considered a hothead, she eventually became a more level-headed fighter. She also showed off her impressive fighting skills during many battles as well as during the Fourth Shinobi War.
