The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime, Tekken 3, and so on are just some great classic examples of games from varying genres that were heralded as perfect games at the time they were released. Despite some graphical and control issues, that largely remains true as players can still have fun with them, especially if they have an updated version.

Astro Bot is as inventive as it is fun to play with, with no collection-based hassling that will slow players down. Yes, there are collectibles in levels, and players do need to rescue robots to move forward between worlds eventually, but they are placed in a way that will not task players too much if they don’t want to explore, unlike other 3D platformers, which is why it is so refreshing.

The various powers are all unique, from inflating like a balloon to becoming an iron ball, and while the main campaign is balanced just right, there are challenge levels to test any platformer fan’s merits. Also, the nods to PlayStation’s history are just a dream for fans.

Baldur's Gate 3 took off like no Western RPG has in quite some time. There’s a lot to praise about it, but it all centers on one thing: choice. Players have the freedom to create their character how they want, they can make dialogue choices that will directly affect and change the story, and they are actually responsible for ordering units around in battle.

Every choice from gameplay mechanics to story quests will affect someone’s playthrough, creating an experience wholly unique, and sharing that playthrough with others is why Baldur's Gate 3 has become such a sociable game. It’s a long and challenging road, but all RPG fans need to experience this at least once.

Blue Prince is a roguelike puzzle game taking place within one house that magically rearranges itself between runs. When players solve a room’s puzzle or just explore it, they can decide which room from a selection they want to travel to next.

The goal is to create a path to the end, one room at a time, and when players hit a dead end, they need to rest and start over. There’s not much in terms of a story or compelling action, but the simple problem-solving is addictive thanks to the combined mechanics of run-based roguelikes.

It’s hard to pick one Forza Horizon game because they are all so compelling, thanks to the mix of an open-world design with a racing game. That said, the varied locations of Mexico in Forza Horizon 5 make it a top choice among fans.

Hades 2 goes above and beyond as a sequel. The original game was already an accessible roguelike for beginners because of the God Mode, which returns in the sequel, but the progression system is even better.

This makes every death feel less wasteful when the next run almost guarantees players are going to do better. The art style, story, characters, and fluid battle system all make it the roguelike to beat all roguelikes. Supergiant Games is a studio that does not miss, and that’s a miracle in and of itself.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been blowing minds for about ten years now, and it still feels like a game that came out yesterday. That might be because there was a recent update on the Switch 2 to make it almost like a brand new experience, but no matter the system it’s on, players are going to have a good time.

The freedom they will get is unmatched, with tons to see and even more ways to experience the world, be it on horseback, on foot, gliding past mountains, or climbing up them. This open nature is why it’s one of the better Zelda games to recommend to players new to the series, even with the difficulty spikes.

Metaphor: ReFantazio is the one modern JRPG that everyone should check out, blending a fantasy world with modern horrors. Like other experiences from the Persona team at Atlus, progression is linear. Every day, players can only do so much, from traveling to dungeon diving to hanging out with party members.

While the freedom is lost, this approach will help players bond with their party more to create an unbreakable bond that most RPG experiences as a whole fail to accomplish. The class-based turn-based RPG system is also excellent, along with the option to fight some battles in real-time. It’s a blend of new and old, and while it takes its time to get going, players will never want it to end.

Red Dead Redemption 2 has one of the better stories in a Rockstar game that is as impactful as any Western film out there. The literal Redemption of protagonist Arthur Morgan is whatever players want it to be, as they have a choice in the matter.

Placing the 2023 remake of Resident Evil 4 on here feels like a bit of a cheat, as the original game is heralded as one of the best entries in the series, let alone one of the greatest of all time. Naturally, that praise extends to the remake, and while it doesn’t try a lot of new things, it builds upon the foundation solidly to update the experience for a new generation.

Leon S. Kennedy is compelling as he tries to rescue the President’s daughter in a foreign country, only to run into a cult worshipping leech-like parasites. The story is cheesy but fun, the gunplay is visceral, and the Merchant is still as infectious as ever. Plus, suitcase Tetris is mesmerizing.

To call the launch of Street Fighter 5 disastrous would be an understatement, which is why a lot was riding on the release of Street Fighter 6. Capcom nailed it, delivering a full package at launch, including an actually compelling campaign.

Players got to create their fighter and challenge others in a hybrid beat ‘em up/fighting game adventure across Final Fight’s Metro City. The story mode would not be anything without a sick roster of fighters from newbies like Lily to old standards like Ryu, along with the best fighting mechanics any hardcore fan would be proud of.
