The first round of LEGO games was not great, like LEGO Island and LEGO Racers. Once Traveller's Tales took over, there was a good consistency between releases. Now, LEGO games are almost always expected to be good, but most of them are aimed at a younger audience.

LEGO Tier List
LEGO Licensed Video Games Tier List

LEGO has released a plethora of licensed games over the years, with some of them still regarded as being the best family-friendly games around.

That doesn’t mean adults can’t have fun with them either, as they are, after all, rated for everyone. There are no mature LEGO games akin to Doom or Mortal Kombat, although that would be cool to see someday. That said, there are a particular handful of LEGO games that adults may connect more with based on gameplay types and associated properties. These games will be ranked based on quality and how well adults would like them.

Despite the name, LEGO Fortnite is not just Fortnite with brick people. The core gameplay mode is a large-scale survivor game wherein players can go out into randomly generated worlds to find crafting materials. Getting through crafting goals can unlock more blueprints to build up their gear or town landscapes.

From big plains to snowy mountains, there’s a lot of variety in the randomly generated maps, akin to the variety builder fans can enjoy in Minecraft. Players can cooperate with a large number of friends online, and while this co-op mode is inviting to players of all ages, adults may appreciate the planning and strategy side of building a village.

LEGO Worlds can best be described as the LEGO corporation’s attempt to make a Minecraft game, which is funny considering Minecraft is definitely like the video game version of building with LEGO bricks. Players can create their avatar and then choose from a few worlds to drop into.

There are some goals that players want to follow, but there is no real story connecting everything together. Players can get various tools to help decorate the environments, like a gun to clone materials and rapidly place them around the environment. Kids and adults can have fun with any sort of creative/building game, but adults may have more focus to complete a lengthy project like recreating the Statue of Liberty, for example.

Party Game

LEGO Party is the LEGO equivalent of Mario Party, complete with various board game models to run around on and various mini-games to compete against friends. Some mini-games include riding unicycles and trying to balance oneself, snowboarding down tight slopes, and playing a soccer-like game with rockets.

Licensed tie-in video games are a common way of promoting other mediums like movies, and while these games vary in quality these are some solid gems.

The nice thing about the avatars is that players can customize them, unlike the more rigid selections in Mario Party. Also, the announcers bring a bit more electricity to matches. Whether players pop this one out for the whole family or they save it for the next adult party night, it’s safe to say things can get a bit rowdy with competitive people in the room.

LEGO Voyagers is a very short co-op-only game featuring two single bricks trying to make their way to a rocket launchpad after witnessing a disaster. The two bricks cannot talk, although players can make them chime, akin to how players could communicate in Journey. The music gives the game a more solemn tone, even though there are bits of whimsy in the adventure.

This tone may be why kids could not have as much fun as adults, since the melancholy vibe and lack of jokes are not something that appeals to everyone. The gameplay loop is simple with puzzles leading the way, and it looks great to boot.

LEGO City Undercover was one of the first original hits to come out of Traveler’s Tales following all of their licensed-based games. The story followed a cop, Chase, going after various criminal organizations around town while undercover. Instead of unlocking new characters to play as, Chase is the primary focus, who can use costumes to his advantage, which give him new abilities.

The structure of the city and crime-based story may appeal to adults who love Grand Theft Auto, even though the tones are different, with LEGO City Undercover being very silly. Still, there are plenty of jokes that only adults will get out of this hard-boiled cop story, like allusions to Dirty Harry or Starsky & Hutch.

LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game is the game that made LEGO games a sensation, and now Traveler’s Tales returned to Star Wars to make a new game based on all nine major releases called LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. The results are incredible, focusing on action more than puzzles, with tighter controls and a wider array of gameplay varieties to boot.

LEGO Horizon Adventures is based on the Horizon series from Sony, which is not quite an adult franchise, but it is more mature. The wild thing about this spinoff is that the protagonist, Aloy, is more chipper than she is in the main games, probably to help her have a more kid-friendly appeal.

That said, adults who played Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West will get a lot more out of the jokes, enemies, and overall cast. The game is also not as strict as other LEGO games, being more focused on platforming and quick action with bows and other weapons in smaller levels rather than being about puzzles. Anyone who hasn’t touched any of the other licensed games in a while, or Horizon fans, should really check out LEGO Horizon Adventures.

LEGO Dimensions was Traveler’s Tales’ attempt to make a toys-to-life game by combining a plethora of movie and TV properties together into a massive crossover game. The main kit came with three playable characters, including Gandalf from The Lord of the Rings, Batman, and WyldStyle from The LEGO Movie.

Gameplay was similar to previous LEGO games, with players having basic attacks, platforming skills, and building techniques to solve puzzles across the multiverse. Adults would enjoy this game perhaps the most out of every other example, simply because of the wealth of nostalgic content, including Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Portal, The Simpsons, Gremlins, and so many other properties that were genuinely respectful of the original material. Not many played the game because of the expense of all the kits and figures, which is a real shame.
