The FPS genre is extremely popular, as it allows players to participate in adrenaline-rushing situations where they have to face off against dangerous enemies. While it could be argued that the 1990s had some of the best FPS titles to date, many great games in this genre have also been released more recently.
7 Best FPS Games That Started As Original Xbox Exclusives, Ranked
The original Xbox revolutionized the FPS genre with games like Halo. Here are some FPS titles that started out as original Xbox exclusives.
With better technology, there comes better bullet physics that feel quite realistic and complement modern FPS game mechanics rather well. And the same happens with the narrative, as being able to pack more things into an FPS title often means more complex situations. Here are some of the best FPS games with an over-the-top story. Players should be advised that this list contains spoilers for some of the games below, so please proceed with caution.
8 Far Cry 5
A Rural American Town And A Dangerous Doomsday Cult
Far Cry 5
- Released
- March 27, 2018
- Developer(s)
- Ubisoft Montreal, Ubisoft Toronto
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 4, Stadia, Xbox One
- Genre(s)
- FPS, Open-World
- Joseph Seed and his cult are in control of a few missile silos
- Far Cry 5's interpretation of rural America can sometimes feel over-the-top
The Far Cry franchise is known for pitting players against large organizations that they’ll have to fight to survive and preserve freedom. Whether it is a fascist government in South America, a dictatorship in the Himalayas, or a dangerous doomsday cult in a fictional town in rural America, there seems to be no exception to the rule.
Although Far Cry 5 has excellent gameplay, powerful weapons, and a lot of serious moments, there are also times when certain aspects feel exaggerated. Not necessarily in a bad way, but it can feel a bit over-the-top here and there.
7 Bulletstorm
Puns, Adult Humor, And A Lot Of Shooting
Bulletstorm
- Players must come up with creative ways to kill their enemies
- Scoring system that rewarded players for thinking outside the box
In a time when adult humor, interesting FPS mechanics with abundant explosions, and creative ways to kill enemies were central aspects in many franchises like Gears of War, Bulletstorm innovated and presented players with a chaotically fun experience.
10 Best FPS Games For Fast-Paced Gameplay, Ranked
From Bulletstorm to Doom, certain first-person shooters keep the player moving constantly, resulting in games that are equally fun and difficult.
This title not only presented players with original characters and a brand-new story, but it also featured a very fun campaign and multiplayer modes. Unfortunately, ever since 2011, when the game was first released, there hasn't been a lot of news around the Bulletstorm universe. However, many players still remember it as one of the most over-the-top FPS games from the early 2010s.
6 Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus
Hitler In Venus Is Absurd, But It Works Somehow
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus
- Released
- October 27, 2017
- Developer(s)
- MachineGames
- Platform(s)
- Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
- Genre(s)
- FPS
- Well-timed comedy that works with the story
- Nazis rule the world in an alternate reality
The premise of the Wolfenstein franchise is already quite over-the-top, as it presents players with an alternate reality where the Nazis were never defeated in World War 2, and instead gained control over the world. However, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus takes this to an entirely new level by introducing concepts like the reanimation of a severed head, Hitler residing on Venus, pregnant women firing high-caliber weapons, and biologically-augmented supersoldiers.
What makes Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus so great, is that even with all these seemingly ridiculous elements, the story works well, the serious moments remain so, and the comedy does not feel cheap or forced.
5 Fallout 4
Some Romance Options And Situations In The Boston Commonwealth Are Very Peculiar
Fallout 4
- Released
- November 10, 2015
- Developer(s)
- Bethesda
- Platform(s)
- PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S
- The Boston Commonwealth has many things for players to discover
- Surprising romance options and NPC interactions
There seems to be a debate going on among fans of the Fallout franchise, as some players claim that Fallout 4 is more an RPG than an FPS game, whereas others say the opposite. Whatever the case, it's undeniable that this game not only presents players with an exciting experience full of action, but also offers a few scenarios that are hard to believe.
Romance options like Gilda Broscoe, as well as many of the mutated characters that play a key role in the story make Fallout 4 a great title. Yes, the story is over-the-top, but what else could be expected from a post-apocalyptic world that was nuked to exhaustion? Players who want a challenge and wish to experience the game on the hardest difficulty should give their Companions some of the best weapons available for them to level the playing field.
4 DOOM Eternal
Vicious Demons And An Overpowered Player Character With Plot Armor
DOOM Eternal
- Released
- March 20, 2020
- Developer(s)
- id Software
- Platform(s)
- Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, Nintendo Switch
- The Doomguy is overpowered, but in a good way
- The demonic forces invading Earth seem to be infinite
Even when the first game was released back in the early 90s, the premise of the Doom franchise was already extremely fictitious. After all, the story revolves around a powerful individual who can single-handedly take on the demonic forces of hell without breaking a sweat.
This, in and of itself, makes the story of DOOM Eternal feel over-the-top, but not necessarily in a bad way. There's just something oddly satisfying about crushing vicious demons under the Doomguy’s boots with a masterfully written heavy metal track playing in the background. The DOOM franchise is so popular that it has inspired many other titles similar to it. Players who’ve already finished DOOM Eternal and want to try something similar will have no shortage of options.
3 BioShock
The Concept Of Rapture Is Very Interesting, Yet Unlikely
BioShock
- Released
- August 21, 2007
- Developer(s)
- Irrational Games
- Genre(s)
- FPS
- The underwater city of Rapture is very interesting
- Splicers pose a significant threat
BioShock is one of those FPS games that helped revolutionize the genre and give players a concept that they didn't know they needed so badly. Set in the fictional underwater city of Rapture, there are many things that are over-the-top in this game’s story.
Not only would it be impossible to build an underwater city in the mid-1940s, but the technology available and the premise of genetic alteration through the consumption of ADAM also seem unlikely, especially for the period the game is set in. However, BioShock somehow manages to make all this work, and the ending is mind-bending, to say the least. Not as much as that of BioShock Infinite, but it comes close. This, along with the interesting villains in the franchise, makes BioShock a title everyone must play at least once.
2 Borderlands 2
Action, Comedy, And Lots Of Exploring
Borderlands 2
- Unique art style that's very recognizable these days
- Solid class system
Although the Borderlands franchise did not innovate in terms of the FPS mechanics it offers compared to other games, its art style is one of the things that has helped propel it to the beloved position it currently holds among the gaming community. On top of this, the class system featured in the games is solid, which further complements the experience players can have with the characters available.
Great FPS Games With Free-Form Level Design
These fantastic FPS games break the mold with a free-form level design that encourages non-linear exploration.
Pandora holds many secrets, and with characters like Face McShooty, there’s no shortage of fun for players to have—even when things can sometimes feel over-the-top in a few ways.
1 BioShock Infinite
A Complex Story With A Mind-bending Finale
BioShock Infinite
- Released
- March 26, 2013
- Developer(s)
- Irrational Games
- Genre(s)
- Shooter
- The game has a surprising plot-twisting ending
- Various Vigors and weapons for players to use
Yet another title in the BioShock franchise, BioShock Infinite is, arguably, the best installment in the series. Not only does this game take players out of Rapture and brings them to the sky-high utopic city of Columbia, but it also has one of the most mind-bending endings in the entire history of gaming.
The idea that a floating city would exist in 1912 is, in and of itself, quite over-the-top. However, when considering that BioShock Infinite also features multiple parallel dimensions, paradoxical scenarios, and vials of Vigor that give the player character, Booker DeWitt, superhuman abilities, the floating city bit seems the most believable. All these elements make BioShock Infinite an outstanding game that will have players entertained for hours, and scratching their heads once they complete it. Unfortunately, any information about an upcoming BioShock game is scarce, so players who fell in love with the franchise will have to keep waiting.
