Whatever genre players are interested in, there’s a guaranteed multiplayer or co-op game out there waiting. From puzzle games to RPGs to shooters, gaming life is good right now. There are even games for co-op fans who have a particular interest in matchups.
10 Most Underrated Co-Op RPGS
Co-Op mechanics aren't very common in most RPGs. These titles incorporate them in interesting and unique ways.
For example, the Borderlands series is great for four-player co-op, but it doesn’t allow players a lot of individuality when they choose their class. Characters stand in for class types like Lilith as a Siren and Salvador as a Gunzerker. For players looking for co-op games with character classes, but more customization options, these are the top picks in no particular order.

Diablo 4 is the classic example of a co-op RPG with classes. Players can team up with four others online, or play two-player couch co-op on consoles, which is always a cozy experience. The game started with quite a few choices like Druid, Rogue, or Sorcerer, and each class has a huge branching skill tree. There have been update seasons with premade heroes as well, but the classic experience of Diablo 4 will give players plenty of choices for their looting experience.
Elden Ring
Hardcore Henries
Elden Ring
- Released
- February 25, 2022
- Co-Op Options: Three Online
FromSoftware’s Soulslike games have always given players character choices from looks to classes. However, classes in games like Elden Ring are more like stepping stones. From the start, players could choose to be something like an Astrologer, Warrior, or Confessor, which would determine starting equipment and stats. An Astrologer is basically a mage who starts with a few spells. If players test it out and don’t like it, they can always build their character in a different direction, whether they are playing alone or summoning two other players into their world.

Baldur's Gate 3 is recommended to be experienced as a solo game the first time through. The story is rich, with many branching dialogue choices besides giving players class options like Ranger, Wizard, or Monk.
After completing it the first time, players should then check out multiplayer, which features two-player couch co-op or four-player online co-op. Combat is turn-based, giving players a different co-op experience that they can strategize with friends, along with taking votes on how to proceed with the story this time around.

Final Fantasy 14 is an MMO, which is typically designed around multiplayer. That said, there are a lot of quests that are solo-only, but the overall appeal in a game like this is teaming up with friends. With numerous expansions, Final Fantasy 14 has a lot of classes, called Jobs, to master, including Samurai, Red Mage, or Dark Knight. Players can team up in small groups of four, bigger parties of eight, or go on massive raids, which differ depending on the quest.

Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Sky is another turn-based game that supports four players, although the gameplay is more traditional. It’s the first mainline Dragon Quest game to feature character customization. Players can make their character and eventually learn to choose classes called Vocations, like Gladiator, Martial Artist, or Priest. Players will need to gather their friends for local DS play, but if that goal is accomplished, Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Sky will still manage to be a good time.

- Co-Op Options: Two Local/Four Online
Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time is the second console game in the series, following the original on 3DS. It features the same classes, called Lives, as the first game, except with two new additions: Artist and Farmer.
They fall into three distinct categories and range from Paladins to Woodcutters to Cooks. Co-op can only be engaged with friends in specific dungeons, so it’s not as open, but it’s still fun to group up.

Outriders is one of the more forgotten Square Enix-published titles. It featured three-player co-op and four classes to choose from, including Devastator, Pyromancer, Technomancer, and Trickster. It’s a third-person shooter with skills and magic, essentially, like the Pyromancer can control fire, and the Technomancer is good with gadgets. It’s one of those underrated gems that didn’t quite hit Borderlands' levels of shooter success, but it did a few things better to help players feel more in control.
Anthem
Fly High With Friends
Anthem
- Released
- February 22, 2019
- Co-Op Options: Four Online
Players need to jump into Anthem before it’s too late because it’s shutting down in January 2026 and deserves one last round of player support. Players can lightly stylize their character, but the real customization options come in the Javelin mechs. These mechs come in four classes, including Ranger, Colossus, Interceptor, and Storm. Storm players are basically mages, while the Colossus rigs are built like the Hulkbuster from the Marvel series. Even if story doesn’t meet BioWare standards, but Anthem is fun to shoot and fly around in with friends.
