The original Pokemon Diamond & Pokemon Pearl gave the Pokemon Roselia a pre-evolution and an evolved form. Therefore, it's only natural for the Roselia-line to make a reappearance in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl.
Players who chose Turtwig as their Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl starter may not have a need for the Grass/Poison-type Roselia. Unlike Turtwig and its evolutions, Roselia's line excels in Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. However, getting Budew or Roselia and then evolving it to Roserade can be quite a process.
Updated on August 8, 2024 by Renri Seong: Budew is a Grass/Poison-type Pokemon that you can catch early in your Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl playthrough. Although fairly weak, Budew evolves into Roselia, which can evolve into Roserade, a well-rounded Pokemon that will serve well on your team. Raising Budew will take time and patience, so if you want Roserade, you'll want to catch Budew as soon as it becomes available. The following guide has been revamped to include specific information on how to catch and evolve Budew and Roselia.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Get Chatot
You'll need the Normal/Flying-type Chatot to complete the Pokedex in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, but you can only find it in two areas.
Where to Find Budew
Budew Location in BDSP
You can find Budew on Route 204, Route 212, Eterna Forest, Grand Underground, and the Safari Zone. If you're searching for Budew in the wild, then you'll want to look for it during the Morning or Day. You can find Budew at Night, too, but it has a lower chance of appearing. Depending on where you're catching Budew, its level will vary:
- Route 204 is north of Jubilife City. Search the tall grass near the lakes (Route 204, south area), and you have a 15-25% chance of getting Budew.
- Route 212 is south of Hearthome City.
- You'll need to go through Eterna Forest after defeating Mars at the Valley Windworks. It's between Eterna City and Route 20 5.
- Budew also spawns in the Safari Zone in all Areas. It's generally not recommended to get Budew through the Great Marsh/Safari Zone due to its flee rate and that it has a 10% spawn chance during the Morning and Day, and 0% chance at Night.
- Budew has a chance of appearing in the Sunlit Cavern and Grassland Cave hideaways in the Grand Underground.
If you want Budew early, then it's recommended you catch one from Route 204.
How to Evolve Budew into Roselia
How to Raise Friendship
To evolve Budew into Roselia, it needs to level up while having high friendship. The quickest way to raise friendship in Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl is to have Budew walk outside its Poke Ball ("Walk Together" function). You can unlock this ability by visiting Amity Square in Hearthome City. Go there once with an eligible Pokemon (the Sinnoh Starters qualify), then leave to unlock the ability to have your Pokemon walk alongside you (mostly) anywhere you go.
You can also feed Budew vitamins (ex: Calcium, Carbos) and Rare Candy. There are also stat-decreasing berries that raise friendship. They are:
- Pomeg Berry: Lowers HP EV by 10 points.
- Kelpsy Berry: Lowers Attack EV by 10 points.
- Hondew Berry: Lowers Special Attack EV by 10 points.
- Qualot Berry: Lowers Defense EV by 10 points.
- Grepa Berry: Lowers Special Defense EV by 10.
- Tamato Berry: Lowers Speed EV by 10.
EV-lowering berries can be very useful if you're trying to EV train your Pokemon. For Budew, you'll want to feed it Kelpsy Berries to raise its friendship. The Budew-line's base Attack stat isn't remarkable to begin with, and its primary means of attacking will be with special moves.
You'll want to avoid giving it medicinal herbs like the Revival Herb, as this will lower its friendship by 5 points.
Another way to raise friendship is to speak to the lady in Veilstone City. She'll massage a Pokemon (only once a day) of your choice. Her house is located on the hill with the Veilstone City Gym; it's the first one on the right.
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: How to Get Houndour and Houndoom
If you're looking for a Fire-type in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, then you may want to consider catching the Dark/Fire-type Houndoom.
Where to Find Roselia
Roselia Location in BDSP
Leveling up Budew can be a hassle for some trainers. Fortunately, you can catch Roselia in the wild or the Grand Underground. Roselia is located in the Trophy Garden, Route 212, Route 221, Route 224-225, and Route 229.
- Route 212 is south of Hearthome City, the same location where you can catch Budew.
- The Trophy Garden is in the Pokemon Mansion, which is also on Route 212.
- Route 221 can only be reached with Surf. It's located south of Sandgem Town, between Route 220 and Pal Park.
- Route 224-225 is to the right of Victory Road. You won't be able to get here until you have the National Dex.
- Route 229 is north of the Resort Area, which is also locked off until the postgame.
- You can also find Roselia in the Sunlight Cavern and Grassland Cave hideaways in the Grand Underground.
Those looking to catch Roselia early should search the Trophy Garden and Route 212. Roselia found in these areas will be around level 17.
How to Evolve Roselia into Roserade
Shiny Stone Locations
To evolve Roselia into its final evolution, Roserade, you will need a Shiny Stone. There are various places to get this item, but they won't come until much later in the game. The Shiny Stone is located in the following areas:
- Iron Island: Take the western exit on B2F, ride the elevator, and there will be a Shiny Stone in the right "branch" of the floor. If you take the left path, it'll lead you outside Iron Island, which is inaccessible from the front.
- Route 228: Ride your bike along the bottom narrow bridge to reach the hill with a Shiny Stone.
You can evolve Roselia into Roserade immediately, but note that Roserade won't learn new moves upon leveling. To have it learn moves it would as a Roselia, you'll need to take it to the Move Tutor in Pastoria City. The cost for remembering moves is one Heart Scale per move.
Should You Use Roserade?
How Good is Roserade?
Roserade has excellent base stats and its learnset and potential moves make it extremely versatile. The only drawback to Roserade is that you will likely evolve your Roselia in the late-game. You can avert this by transferring your Roserade to Sword/Shield or Scarlet/Violet and evolving your Roselia with a Shiny Stone in those regions. Besides that, Roserade's main strengths are its Speed and Special Attack. You'll notice its moveset mostly consists of special moves, taking advantage of its Sp. Attk base stat. Its dual typing (Grass/Poison) gives it coverage that most Grass-type Pokemon don't have, and it can learn Poison-type moves which are super-effective against Fairy-type.
Here's more information you'll want to know about Roserade:

Because of Roserade's base stats, its best Nature to have is Timid (+Spd, -Attk). However, you can get away with a Modest (+Sp. Attk, -Attk) or even Calm (+Sp. Def, - Attk) if you want to prioritize its Special Attack or Special Defense growth respectively.

Recommeded Moves for Roserade
- Because of its dual-typing, Sludge Bomb is an absolute must for Roserade. This is a special Poison-type move that has a 30% chance of poisoning the target, 100% accuracy, and 90 power. This will make it very useful against (most) Fairy-type Pokemon.
- Energy Ball is another good move for Roserade. This has 100% accuracy, a power of 90, and has a 10% chance of loweirng the opponent's Special Defense. You can teach Roserade this move by using a TM53.
- Toxic Spikes is good to have if you're using Roserade to set up hazards for your opponent. This causes the opponent's Pokemon to be badly poisoned when swapped in.
- The last move for Roserade can be your own choice, but you may want to consider Dazzling Gleam. This is a Fairy-type move with a power of 80 and an accuracy of 100%. It doesn't have any secondary effects, but a Fairy-type move gives Roserade an advantage over most Dark, Dragon, and Fighting-type Pokemon. Roserade can learn Dazzling Gleam with TM21 in Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl.
