The Battlefield franchise has made many attempts over the years to diversify its core gameplay experiences, with the series clearly wanting to offer more beyond the large-scale combat of its main multiplayer modes. Smaller-scale experiences and battle royale-aligned modes have made their way into the IP through its more recent releases, and there is one potential mode that has been a lingering possibility for quite some time.

Rumors have existed for years over a potential Dino Mode in Battlefield, which would see players fight off a range of hostile dinosaurs in a unique PvE survival experience. Dino Mode originally stemmed from a satirization of Call of Duty's increasingly outlandish multiplayer content around the time of Battlefield 3, but the rumored setting of Battlefield's next title and the mixed reception of CoD's upcoming survival modes might finally make the addition of a Dino Mode quite successful if done correctly.

The Next Battlefield Could Introduce Dino Mode in a More Tasteful Way

It was Battlefield's community that largely popularized the concept of a potential Dino Mode for the franchise, with what started as a joke snowballing over the years to become a constant source of rumors and debates. The main idea behind Dino Mode has always been using it as a way for Battlefield to compete with Call of Duty's massively popular survival mode, Zombies, with Dino Mode offering a similar gameplay loop to the famous CoD mode.

Battlefield and Call of Duty are arguably each other's largest industry competitors, with CoD having had the edge over Battlefield for some time, and the broad scope of CoD's annual experiences is quite a large contributing factor to this. Despite having quite an outlandish premise, Zombies has grown to become a defining element of Call of Duty's identity, offering a completely unique experience compared to single-player campaigns and core multiplayer, and there is no reason that Battlefield could not replicate this to a degree.

The concept of Battlefield operators fighting for survival against waves of dinosaurs may have started as a tongue-in-cheek jab at the increasingly eccentric nature of CoD Zombies, but the future of Battlefield might offer a way to implement such a mode without being too out of place. Rumors strongly suggest that a new Battlefield title is set to release in 2025, with the game supposedly having a near-future setting not so dissimilar to Battlefield 2042, and dinosaurs could strangely fit into the lore of the title.

Battlefield's Dino Mode Could Exploit a Potential Call of Duty Weakness

2042 toyed with the concept of top-secret testing in the name of combat efficiency, as seen within maps like Redacted, and the next Battlefield title could narratively justify a Dino Mode if the ancient creatures were created by military cloning experimentation gone wrong. Of course, this sort of Dino Mode would solely exist away from standard multiplayer PvP, but a narrative tie-in like this would still allow the franchise to maintain a semblance of the serious tone that many fans love.

This also comes at a time when the future of Call of Duty Zombies has received fairly mixed reviews, with Black Ops 6's recent deep-dive into its Liberty Falls map dividing fan opinion. CoD Zombies is seemingly struggling to adopt a consistent thematic identity, potentially leaving a small exploitable gap for a rival franchise to adopt its own PvE survival experience. While the next Battlefield should focus on its core PvP gameplay first and foremost, the potential near-future uncertainty around CoD Zombies and the rumored setting of the title could create the perfect conditions for Dino Mode to finally become a reality.
